DESCRIPTION:Join the Friday-after-work crowd at The Docks for live music at Acoustic Night presented by Fundy Harbour Group\nDILLON RYAN\nThe perpetually evolving artist shows no signs of slowing down. It is clear he was born to play music and that trajectory has led him down an illustrious path. Dillon Ryan & The Dream Romantic weave melodic lullabies and gothic ballads that cling to listeners. SUMMARY:Piano Room Series - Harvest Edition!
DESCRIPTION:About:\nWhen critically-acclaimed Canadian recording artist and versatile singer-songwriter Colin Fowlie arrived on the scene he brought with him a storied past\, unique and compelling compositions in song\, and charismatic vocal stylings. He turned heads with his debut full-length album “Party Music” and has demonstrated tremendous growth and exploration\, making an emphatic statement with his sophomore album “East of Nowhere” in 2021.\nFowlie continues to evolve his craft as not only a singer\, songwriter\, recording artist\, and touring performer but also as a music educator\, mentor\, and content creator. He spends the balance of his time with family or exploring the world on two wheels with the wind in his face.\nThe unique character of his songs fuse elements of folk\, rock\, blues and Americana/Canadiana into a special blend of universally themed storytelling that\, along with his down-to-earth personality\, create magic that audiences adore.\nColin’s discography has garnered radio airplay on campus\, community and commercial radio across Canada and has graced various charts\, both regionally and nationally\, including the #1 position on the national Folk/Roots/Blues chart. He has accrued more than 3 million views on YouTube and received a MusicNB nomination for “Breakthrough Artist of the Year” and “SOCAN Song of the Year” in 2019 an additional “Song of the Year” nomination in 2021\, and a showcase at the 2022 ECMAs. Radio stations in the UK\, Holland\, Australia\, and the USA have also embraced his music since 2015.\nhttps://www.colinfowlie.com/\nJoel Manchester was born in Digby Nova Scotia to a musical family. Singing around the campfire was commonplace\, while practicing harmonies and learning his first few chords on guitar. His father recorded several albums throughout his childhood which opened Joel’s eyes to the professional side of music. Creativity is Joel’s driving passion\, whether it’s writing songs\, painting or making films. Currently\, his main musical outlet is singing and writing songs with the band Run The River\, who have been nominated for music New Brunswick’s breakthrough artist of the year in 2021 and music video of the year in 2022.\nhttps://www.runtherivermusic.com/\nKatie Schurman is a 20-year-old Fredericton based singer/songwriter\, originally hailing from Embro\, Ontario. Singing since she could speak\, Katie was always encouraged by her family to keep her musical passions as an active part in her life. This led her to pursue musical theatre for most of her childhood. Theatre taught Katie the importance of story-telling with music and this shows in her current writing and performances.\nSince picking up the guitar at 13\, Katie has played her fair share of coffee houses\, open mics\, and gigs in Ontario and New Brunswick. Shortly after turning 19\, Katie entered the Fredericton music scene with a repertoire comprised of many favourite songs by Canadian women (Alanis Morissette\, Amanda Marshall\, Jann Arden\, Joni Mitchell\, etc). By the time Katie turned 20\, she had written an album’s worth of songs that she now frequently performs around the area. She pulls from Americana\, rock\, country\, and folk for much of her inspiration.\nDetails:\n*Donations are encouraged to help support the artist.*\nSeating will be available.\nBYO-non-alcoholic-B. SUMMARY:Valmy & Catherine Kennedy at Haven Music Hall!
DESCRIPTION:If you love moving vocalists and skilled instrumentalism\, this evening with Valmy and Catherine Kennedy is not to be missed!! All ages\, $15 adv/$20 at the door. Doors 7:30\, show 8pm!\nValmy is Newfoundland-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Ontario who’s been following the ocean and making home on the East Coast. Exploring themes of wonder\, loss\, and healing\, she uses her folk-influenced music to tell stories about loving and stumbling your way through the dark.\, Valmy creates and performs by weaving nature-inspired melodic swells and atmospheric harmonies with her contemplative writing.\nThis is demonstrated through her debut full-length album ‘The In Between’\, independently released in September 2023 and warmly received by listeners\, with a thoughtful review by Tony Ploughman of Fred’s Records: “The rhythms and melodies wrap around the mind and soul like a lovingly patched quilt…There is a cohesiveness to this full album offering meditative musings on balancing one’s own mental state in harmony with nature\, the songs providing a methodical process to achieve that balance. And the underlying intensity to follow through on the beckoning of one’s thoughts and emotions to create is constant…Deftly produced\, engineered and mixed\, “The In Between” is one of 2023’s finest NL Releases”.\n.\nAward-winning singer-songwriter Catherine Kennedy invites you to join her on the long way home. Any story worth telling deserves the time it takes to travel along the nostalgic route\, and Catherine’s soulful lyrics and bluesy tones will transport you directly there.\nOne music-lover praised how “the beautiful quality and range of Catherine’s voice pairs perfectly with her gift of storytelling. Catherine’s music makes you feel part of something bigger. Her songs always seem as though they’re written for you.”\nFollowing hot on the heel’s of Catherine Kennedy’s Harvest Jazz and Blues performance (with McKinley\, Morrison & Williams) opening for the legendary Victor Wooten & the Wooten Brothers\, come out to hear her on the Haven Music Hall stage!\n———–\nAccessibility\nHaven Music Hall is a street-level small music venue without fixed seating. SUMMARY:Katie Cruel & Leanne Hoffman LIVE
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to welcome the amazing Katie Cruel to the Five & Dime stage!\nTickets $11.98\nhttps://www.eventbrite.ca/e/katie-cruel-leanne-hoffman-live-tickets-1022645599517?aff=oddtdtcreator\nHere’s a little more about her and her debut album: Lost Vagas:\n——-\nhttps://www.katiecruel.com/\n“The past is forever bleeding into the present on Lost Vagus\, Katie Cruels debut. Recorded on Radar in a cow barn\, Cruel’s record is an intoxicating collection of tainted love songs that float within the trademark reverb and air space perfected by Grammy-winning engineer and producer Mark Howard. Katie Cruel has taken the stage at Massey Hall opening for Wilco in the summer of 2024. Cruel has also shared the stage alongside Jerry Leger\, Timber Timbre\, Kathleen Edwards and more.\n“Katie Cruel” is a centuries-old traditional folk song that tells the tale of a woman who falls out of favour with those who once celebrated her wild charms. Katie Cruel is a singer-songwriter who named herself after it.\nAll of the songs on Lost Vagus resonate with a heavy blend of resignation and vulnerability as they tell the stories of women who find themselves at the intersection of chaos and control. These are songs for those who know how it feels to distrust your own desires. People who exhale smoke with every sigh. Katie Cruel is a ghost on the move but she keeps her eyes on the road.\nHoward’s reputation for live-off-the-floor techniques allowed for a near-telepathic interconnectivity among the players (Cruel\, Anna Ruddick\, Gavin Brown\, Jimmy Bowskill\, Michael Chaves)\, resulting in an immersive musical experience. “ I figure why not just show exactly and honestly who and where I am right now. But with really nice reverb.”\nCruel highlights the mysterious ways in which the world provides answers to questions we didn’t know we wanted to ask.”\n✍️ Damian Rogers & Kate Boothman\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1194014075168506/

SUMMARY:Adam Baldwin + Terra Spencer at Wilmot United Church SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Adam Baldwin + Terra Spencer at Wilmot United Church\nDoors 7pm / Show 8pm\nAll Ages\nTickets + Passes: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/shiveringsongs?\nPasses grant access to all events including The Fredericton Playhouse.\nWith his sophomore full-length\, Concertos & Serenades\, Adam Baldwin – born and raised “inside these imaginary lines” that denote Nova Scotia – offers an east coast testimony that challenges the typical tourism marketing gloss. Through eight masterful yarns\, the songwriter bears witness and pays tribute to a tradition of desperation: sinners and losers\, perpetual failures\, and down-and-out phantoms that haunt his home’s coastlines and back roads – without a passing judgement. Some of the tales happened\, some didn’t\, and most walk a tightrope between truth and fiction. “I feel like a lot of these stories just kinda flew in on the west wind off Porter’s Lake or off the Atlantic Ocean here\,” Baldwin says. “And there’s a lot of stories to be told. Just from livin’ out here\, some of the people you meet – there’re some hard\, hard men and women out here who worked their asses off out on the ocean for decades. They’re different types of people\, man\, and they’ve got different stories to tell\, and I felt like they’d been left out of our song writing tradition for a few years.” In Baldwin’s voice – salty with the flavour of a dialect he comes by honestly – those stories are done justice. The uneasy folk of “Causeway Road” strums out a family fishing tragedy and Danny Fingers’ subsequent botched revenge; a ghost calls out to his wife from the bottom of a collapsed Springhill mine on the gossamer “No. 2 Colliery;” and across the water\, a soldier reflects in the lonesome “A Plea to St. Peter.” It’s not all sorrow and tragedy\, but no one’s winning the lottery\, either – unless you count getting lucky\, like the gas jockey on the upbeat “Gerald Burgess RaceTrac Full Serve Autobody\,” or nearly outrunning the cops\, post-stickup on the rollicking “Good Gracious.” In the shadowy “Gone to the Dogs\,” Baldwin tells the story of a kid forsaken by God not once but twice. And with the dreamy “Lighthouse in Little Lorraine\,” he weaves an epic of drugs\, betrayal\, and murder at the edge of Cape Breton. As the protagonist and his sauced crew get booted from a church hall dance\, you can almost hear “The Mull River Shuffle” float out the door\, too – the other side of being\, “halfway through a bottle of moonshine\, getting all fired up.”\nBad ideas\, VCRs\, crumbling factories\, terrible therapists\, hairy dogs\, wrinkled shirts\, French fries\, questionable tattoos…all are fair game for Nova Scotian funeral director-turned-songwriter Terra Spencer. And the songs are good ones\, judging from the stack of awards her three albums have received and from the caliber of collaborators like Ben Caplan\, Dave Gunning\, and David Francey\, who welcomed Terra as a co-writer and performer on his JUNO-winning album The Breath Between. Terra has just released her fourth solo album\, ‘Sunset’\, which she will be touring across Canada in 2024/25 with her first US dates. Its dozen songs feature guests from East to West – Matt Andersen\, The Bombadils\, Ryan Cook\, Ian Sherwood\, Pillow Fite\, and Stephen Fearing. Her duet with Stewart Legere called “Brick and Mortar” was named the winner of the Commonwealth Song Contest out of 20\,000 entries. Although her butterscotch voice\, deft fingerstyle guitar\, and gospel-charged piano make her a formidable musician\, it’s her onstage ease and crackling homespun wit that make each show feel like a knee-to-knee conversation in a room of 5 or 500. “The real deal.” – Ron Sexsmith\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1092038472319512/

SUMMARY:Les Hay Babies + Kaia Kater at Wilmot United Church
DESCRIPTION:Les Hay Babies + Kaia Kater at Wilmot United Church\nDoors 7pm / Show 8pm\nAll Ages\nTickets + Passes: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/shiveringsongs?\nPasses grant access to all events including The Fredericton Playhouse.\nLes Hay Babies\, one of Canada’s hottest francophone bands\, have been bringing forth their sparkling\, multifaceted folk-rock for over a decade. New Brunswick-born Acadians Julie Aubé\, Katrine Noël and Vivianne Roy were friends before joining their voices to a common project and thus strengthening the bonds that unite them through the music they create—as long as fun comes before work\, and work is done while having fun\nKaia Kater’s new album\, Strange Medicine (coming May 2024 on Free Dirt Records)\, opens with a haunting vision. Accompanied by Aoife O’Donovan\, Kater sings of the women burned at the stake as witches in 17th century Salem\, Massachusetts and their wish to strike back: “I dreamt I moved through you and / Burned my name into your chest”. It’s an opening salvo from an album that celebrates the power of women and oppressed people throughout history as they rise up and turn the poison of centuries of oppression into a strange kind of medicine. Kater’s songs are dialogues with these historical figures and meditations on her own modern life as well. In the years since her 2018 album\, Grenades\, on Smithsonian Folkways\, Kater has taken time to reinvent herself and hone her skills\, first attending film school to learn composition\, then diving deeper into her songwriting to come up with her most personal album yet. Feeling the pressure as a talented young songwriter\, banjo player\, and bandleader with three successful albums and an NPR Tiny Desk Concert under her belt\, Kater struggled initially with the expectations of her adopted genre\, Americana. “I was factoring everybody else’s perception into my songwriting\,” she says. “Would I write more honestly if I knew that no one would ever hear this?” With that in mind\, Kater retreated to her apartment in Montréal. Sitting at home with her banjo\, the songs unfolded in personal intimacy\, revealing windows into the perspective of women and revolutionaries through history. Co-producing with Joe Grass (Elisapie\, The Barr Brothers)\, Kater invited close friends and colleagues O’Donovan and Allison Russell to sing on the album\, along with longtime hero and American legend Taj Mahal. With lush arrangements and unexpected musical ideas drawn from genres as surprising as minimalist composition\, jazz drumming\, and film scores\, Strange Medicine is the bold next step in Kater’s career. It’s an album made beyond the white gaze of Americana\, unbeholden to a music industry that so often tokenizes and silences marginalized voices\, a Black Feminist perspective on a genre that refuses to cede power to Black women. But ultimately it’s a celebration of the self. The words of the poem “won’t you celebrate with me” by Lucille Clifton echoed in Kater’s ears throughout the process of making this album.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/598027199353784/
