SUMMARY:Trajectories presents "Quiet on Kökar" with special guest Emily Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:Montréal/Fredericton based electroacoustic composers collective Trajectories will put on a special audiovisual performance with guest composer Emily Kennedy at Saint John Arts Centre on April\, 20\, 2024 to celebrate sights and sounds from their latest project entitled “Quiet on Kökar”. This 9-piece collection of etudes was developed while attending The Åland Archipelago Guest Artist Residence program in Kökar\, Åland\, Finland throughout October 2023. The event itself will consist of live audio performance from Trajectories backed by a video accompaniment containing archival images of Kökar collected from the local museum as well as video documented by the collective throughout their stay.\nThis performance will follow their February 2024 live Canadian debut in Montréal as part of programming by Codes d’accès\, which drew over 100 people. They will also be performing on April 19\, 2024 at Fredericton’s Charlotte Street Arts Centre as part of Connexion ARC’s 40th Anniversary programming\, which will include local soundmakers Emily Kennedy and Counting on Downstairs. In May 2024\, the group will embark on a 1-week creative residency and performance at Sound Art Lab in Struer\, Denmark\, followed by 2 performances in Sweden at the start of June.\nTrajectories Website:\nhttps://www.trajectories.net\nEmily Kennedy Website:\nhttp://www.emily-kennedy.com/\nTrajectories Music:\nhttps://trajectoriescollective.bandcamp.com/album/quiet-on-k-kar\nTrajectories Bio:\nTrajectories is an ensemble of electroacoustic composers and interdisciplinary artists based in Montréal and New Brunswick consisting of Charles Harding\, Malte Leander\, Connor Cook\, and the late Michael Pinsonneault. The collective centers its exploration on a vast array of multi-disciplinary projects that delve into diverse and pertinent themes. Through a dynamic interplay of collaborative insights\, the collective navigates and reflects upon contemporary issues\, events\, and research areas\, with each member’s unique perspective influencing the group’s trajectory and vice versa.\nIn October 2023\, Charles Harding\, Connor Cook\, and Malte Leander participated in the Åland Archipelago Guest Artist Residence program (Kökar\, Åland\, Finland)\, a transformative experience that led to the creation of “Live on Kökar\,” a series of captivating performance videos\, and “Quiet on Kökar\,” an album of etudes released on February 9\, 2024. This 3-week period of intense creativity and reflection also inspired an upcoming documentary short\, chronicling their immersive engagement with Kökar’s history\, community\, ecology\, and environment. This exploration into Kökar’s landscape and heritage has opened new avenues for their practice-based research\, laying the groundwork for exciting developments in their artistic journey.\nMusic Description:\nThe album Quiet on Kökar was conceived of during a recent artist residency undertaken on the small island of Kökar in the Åland Archipelago in Finland\, experimenting with a variety of recording set-ups and collaborative compositional techniques\, following ideas of the non-anthropocentric positioning of the artist\, both at the time of recording\, composing and performing.\nThe island of Kökar is a quiet and serene environment\, located in the middle of the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland\, amongst a grand archipelago called Åland that consists of thousands of tiny and large islands. This particular island is home to approximately 225 people who live in a place accessible exclusively by boat and helicopter. Kökar has a deep spiritual history; having been a point on the Nordic Pilgrimage route “St. Olav Waterway” since at least the 14th century. Small enough to walk across in a few hours\, the island is fiercely exposed to the weather of the sea. At one point during the stay there was a record breaking wind storm that snapped trees and shook the house. It was a very humbling experience and served as a sobering reminder of the unstoppable forces of nature. Through visits to the Kökar museum and communication with residents of the island there were new lessons learned about the vulnerability of the island’s ecosystem as well as the dutiful efforts the community is taking to maintain conscious sustainability in daily life. Throughout its settled history the island has seen many cycles of abundance and scarcity connected to the amount of energy it takes to sustain human populations. The recognition of this vulnerability was ever present while engaging in creative processes during the 3 weeks of the residency.\nThroughout the stay there were efforts made to document expeditions utilizing field recorders\, hydrophones and various cameras to become immersed in the sights and sounds of Kökar. The aim was to nurture gradually emerging artistic themes surrounding the island’s ecological and historical character and\, as a result\, engage in new work with personal meaning amplified by the island’s deeper context. Kökar revealed many things\, sharing reminders of the fragility of ecosystems and the irrevocably intertwined connections between human and non-human agents in even the most remote environments\, awareness of which will be carried forward into future Trajectories work.\nThank you to the Åland Archipelago Guest Artist Residence and to Kökar Hembygdsmuseum.\nWe would like to thank and acknowledge the support of SOCAN Foundation for helping to make this project possible.\nAn important part of this process was the mentorship\, guidance and creative input of the late Michael Pinsonneault\, who was incredibly generous with his time and energy\, and was an essential part of this group from its inception. Before we left for Kökar\, we spoke at length with Michael about the blueprints for what a creative journey like this residency could lead to. We have lost our teacher\, collaborator and friend and wherever he is now\, we wish him the best\, and will keep him in our hearts. The example Michael set will allow us to continue to create with presence\, openness and curiosity\, and we will do so in his honour. Rest in peace M.P.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/937099625086201/

SUMMARY:Linda McLean in Fredericton - Charlotte Street Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:LINDA McLEAN’S UPCOMING IS A DOUBLE LAUNCH:\nNEW MUSIC AND A NEW BOOK OF ATLANTIC CANADA\n“Once in a great while\, out of the blue\, comes an indie masterpiece. Such is the case of Linda McLean… Another superb Canadian female singer-songwriter you need to seek out.” – Maverick Magazine\, UK\n“McLean’s lyrics are gently introspective and reflective\, and they possess the ring of hard- earned truths.”—Exclaim Magazine\n“Ranked among the best of her North American contemporaries; country-tinged beauty with reference points stretching from Lucinda Williams to KD Lang.” – UK Music Media Review\nAcclaimed singer-songwriter Linda McLean showcases her multi-talents this April with the release of new single ‘Write Your Song\,’ the first track from her new album\, Songs for the Book\, due for release April 23rd\, 2024. The album is the musical accompaniment to her new book\, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING IMPORTANT\, a narrative non-fiction that follows her own creative journey to self-love and belonging\, available for pre-order now.\nSongs for the Book act as an exclamation mark for each chapter and provide readers with a way of connecting even more deeply with McLean’s narrative non-fiction. “The Importance of Being Important” touches on creative struggle\, self-sabotage and her journey to self-love through songwriting and singing. There are a number of touch-points for readers to listen to the songs\, discovered through each chapter via secret listen links and lyric pages.\nApril 20\, Fredricton\, NB\, Charlotte Street Arts Centre\, 7:30\nMcLean is setting an abundant table\, aiming to nurture her audience one heart at a time. A master storyteller in her prime\, her performance of Readings and Songs is part entertainment\, part internal contemplation\, and part ‘let’s sing together and feel great about life.’\nSongs for the Book is McLean’s fourth full length album\, and is raw\, gutsy and reflects the introspective themes in the book. The first single ‘Write Your Song\,’ was written while McLean was traveling solo at age 63\, farm-sitting in northern France\, and reflecting on this overarching message: the way to being our best self is to stand in the centre of all life and know we are responsible for our choices.\nThis has already been a big year for her\, with the release of 2 singles earlier in the year\, and the formation of a new band\, Linda McLean & The Awakening. With influence from Blue Rodeo and Neil Young\, the band has been selling out venues all across Nova Scotia\, including two back-to-back nights at The Carleton in Halifax.\nAs a creative jack of all trades\, Linda McLean is breaking barriers\, combining her music\, writing and performance. Stay tune for lots more to come from this exciting artist. SUMMARY:Theresa Malenfant & Scott Medford in Saint John
DESCRIPTION:ECMA winner Theresa Malenfant and renowned guitarist Scott Medford have become one of the most popular blues duo acts in the Atlantic Provinces. They have been performing together in a band for years\, but decided to work as a duo only 6 years ago. In that short time they managed to win second place in an International Blues Challenge (IBC) held in Memphis Tennessee.\nTheresa and Scott have an intuitive way of working with each other\, and the mutual respect and admiration for the other’s abilities is evident from their stage performance.\nTheresa Malenfant has earned the nickname “Queen Bee of the Blues”. When you hear the first note you’ll know why. And she personally selected Scott Medford to be her guitarist. That speaks volumes about his level of playing.\nAn incredible evening of music you’ll not soon forget!\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1546988656122288/

SUMMARY:FREDERICTON- JAZZY ARABIA
DESCRIPTION:Within the context of the Arab Heritage Festival 2024\, the Arab Culture Club is presenting the Canadian Arabic Orchestra’s production ‘Jazzy Arabia’ in collaboration with local musicians. Jazzy Arabia is an Arabic and Jazz fusion. The description explains the theme of the concert: Jazz was born into African American communities struggling to bring cheer and joy into their challenging lives; nothing speaks of humanity’s will to live and share happiness louder than music\, and no music brings happiness to the world more than Arabic music. Marrying Arabic music with jazz is an experience like no other.\n***************\nDans le contexte du festival du patrimpoine arabe\, le Club de la Culture Arabe présente la production de l’Orchestre Arabe Canadien\, ‘Jazzy Arabia’\, en collaboration avec des musiciens locaux.
