SUMMARY:Connor & Logan Duo Live at The Cottage
DESCRIPTION:Connor & Logan Duo\nat The Cottage\n$20 in person or e-transfer davejaglove@gmail.com\nBYOB\nConnor Fox (Hypochondriacs) and Logan Richard are touring New Brunswick to bring awareness to their respective abilities as two of the Maritimes brightest young guitarists and songwriters. Two stools\, two guitars and two massive talents in one amazing show.\nFox has been playing since he was old enough to hold a guitar\, but that was merely his apprenticeship. In more recent years has turned heads in the role of lead guitarist for the extremely popular live act\, The Hypochondriacs. Outside of that\, Connor has begun to flex his talents in order to realize his own songwriting abilities with the release of his debut album\, Music Room\, which not only highlights his delightfully varied approach to the guitar\, but also showcases his vocal chops\, which get stronger with every performance.\nRichard launched as a solo artist in 2017\, when he was still a teenager. More recently\, this three time Music PEI Award winner and ECMA nominee\, has taken his profile to the next level with support from both CBC Radio 1 and 2\, and hitting one million streams on Spotify. His latest EP\, Learning To Love (2023) showcases a more mature\, reflective side of his songwriting. Richard’s talents have made him a sought-after session\, and live\, guitar player capable of working everything from the blues\, to pop\, to indie rock.\nIt’s gonna be mind blowing!\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/428993236172693/

SUMMARY:Trajectories presents "Quiet on Kökar" with special guest Emily Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:Montréal/Fredericton based electroacoustic composers collective Trajectories will put on a special audiovisual performance with guest composer Emily Kennedy at Saint John Arts Centre on April\, 20\, 2024 to celebrate sights and sounds from their latest project entitled “Quiet on Kökar”. This 9-piece collection of etudes was developed while attending The Åland Archipelago Guest Artist Residence program in Kökar\, Åland\, Finland throughout October 2023. The event itself will consist of live audio performance from Trajectories backed by a video accompaniment containing archival images of Kökar collected from the local museum as well as video documented by the collective throughout their stay.\nThis performance will follow their February 2024 live Canadian debut in Montréal as part of programming by Codes d’accès\, which drew over 100 people. They will also be performing on April 19\, 2024 at Fredericton’s Charlotte Street Arts Centre as part of Connexion ARC’s 40th Anniversary programming\, which will include local soundmakers Emily Kennedy and Counting on Downstairs. In May 2024\, the group will embark on a 1-week creative residency and performance at Sound Art Lab in Struer\, Denmark\, followed by 2 performances in Sweden at the start of June.\nTrajectories Website:\nhttps://www.trajectories.net\nEmily Kennedy Website:\nhttp://www.emily-kennedy.com/\nTrajectories Music:\nhttps://trajectoriescollective.bandcamp.com/album/quiet-on-k-kar\nTrajectories Bio:\nTrajectories is an ensemble of electroacoustic composers and interdisciplinary artists based in Montréal and New Brunswick consisting of Charles Harding\, Malte Leander\, Connor Cook\, and the late Michael Pinsonneault. The collective centers its exploration on a vast array of multi-disciplinary projects that delve into diverse and pertinent themes. Through a dynamic interplay of collaborative insights\, the collective navigates and reflects upon contemporary issues\, events\, and research areas\, with each member’s unique perspective influencing the group’s trajectory and vice versa.\nIn October 2023\, Charles Harding\, Connor Cook\, and Malte Leander participated in the Åland Archipelago Guest Artist Residence program (Kökar\, Åland\, Finland)\, a transformative experience that led to the creation of “Live on Kökar\,” a series of captivating performance videos\, and “Quiet on Kökar\,” an album of etudes released on February 9\, 2024. This 3-week period of intense creativity and reflection also inspired an upcoming documentary short\, chronicling their immersive engagement with Kökar’s history\, community\, ecology\, and environment. This exploration into Kökar’s landscape and heritage has opened new avenues for their practice-based research\, laying the groundwork for exciting developments in their artistic journey.\nMusic Description:\nThe album Quiet on Kökar was conceived of during a recent artist residency undertaken on the small island of Kökar in the Åland Archipelago in Finland\, experimenting with a variety of recording set-ups and collaborative compositional techniques\, following ideas of the non-anthropocentric positioning of the artist\, both at the time of recording\, composing and performing.\nThe island of Kökar is a quiet and serene environment\, located in the middle of the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland\, amongst a grand archipelago called Åland that consists of thousands of tiny and large islands. This particular island is home to approximately 225 people who live in a place accessible exclusively by boat and helicopter. Kökar has a deep spiritual history; having been a point on the Nordic Pilgrimage route “St. Olav Waterway” since at least the 14th century. Small enough to walk across in a few hours\, the island is fiercely exposed to the weather of the sea. At one point during the stay there was a record breaking wind storm that snapped trees and shook the house. It was a very humbling experience and served as a sobering reminder of the unstoppable forces of nature. Through visits to the Kökar museum and communication with residents of the island there were new lessons learned about the vulnerability of the island’s ecosystem as well as the dutiful efforts the community is taking to maintain conscious sustainability in daily life. Throughout its settled history the island has seen many cycles of abundance and scarcity connected to the amount of energy it takes to sustain human populations. The recognition of this vulnerability was ever present while engaging in creative processes during the 3 weeks of the residency.\nThroughout the stay there were efforts made to document expeditions utilizing field recorders\, hydrophones and various cameras to become immersed in the sights and sounds of Kökar. The aim was to nurture gradually emerging artistic themes surrounding the island’s ecological and historical character and\, as a result\, engage in new work with personal meaning amplified by the island’s deeper context. Kökar revealed many things\, sharing reminders of the fragility of ecosystems and the irrevocably intertwined connections between human and non-human agents in even the most remote environments\, awareness of which will be carried forward into future Trajectories work.\nThank you to the Åland Archipelago Guest Artist Residence and to Kökar Hembygdsmuseum.\nWe would like to thank and acknowledge the support of SOCAN Foundation for helping to make this project possible.\nAn important part of this process was the mentorship\, guidance and creative input of the late Michael Pinsonneault\, who was incredibly generous with his time and energy\, and was an essential part of this group from its inception. Before we left for Kökar\, we spoke at length with Michael about the blueprints for what a creative journey like this residency could lead to. We have lost our teacher\, collaborator and friend and wherever he is now\, we wish him the best\, and will keep him in our hearts. The example Michael set will allow us to continue to create with presence\, openness and curiosity\, and we will do so in his honour. Rest in peace M.P.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/937099625086201/

SUMMARY:Nico Paulo & Band with Len O'Neill
DESCRIPTION:Come on out to Haven Music Hall on Thursday May 9 for an evening with Nico Paulo & Band\, featuring special guest Len O’Neill!\nAdvance $20+tax\nDoor $25+tax\nall-ages!\nDoors 7pm\, show 8pm\nNico Paulo is a Portuguese/Canadian songwriter\, performer\, and visual artist. She moved to Canada in 2014 to pursue her career\, originally setting down roots in the vibrant Toronto arts community\, and eventually moved east to become an essential part of Newfoundland’s celebrated music scene. Paulo’s highly anticipated\, self-titled debut LP\, which arrived in spring 2023\, is a melodically dynamic\, heart-baring collection that finds her exploring the interconnected nature of relationships and the flow of time in lush\, sophisticated pop arrangements. The album’s textures come courtesy of production by Joshua Van Tassel (Villages\, Fortunate Ones) and Tim Baker (Hey Rosetta!).\nPaulo released her debut single\, the wistful “Please Don’t Forget\,” in 2019. Her debut EP\, Wave Call\, arrived in 2020\, featuring contributions from musicians Bravo Kilo\, Evan J Cartwright\, Kwame Appiah-Kubi\, and Tim Baker\, with production and engineering handled by David Gavan Baxter. She toured the EP in Europe in 2020\, making stops in Portugal\, the UK\, Ireland\, France\, and Germany. Her latest releases—the Live at First Light EP recorded for the Lawnya Vawnya Artist Residency and a cover of José Afonso’s Portuguese folk song “O Cavaleiro e o Anjo”—were both recorded in Paulo’s adopted hometown of St. John’s\, and include appearances by local musicians Tim Baker\, Adam Hogan\, Steve Maloney\, and Mary B. Waldram.\nLen O’Neill\, a singer-songwriter from St. John’s\, Newfoundland\, began his musical journey in the local pub and bar scene\, drawing inspiration from Canadian indie rock pioneers like Wintersleep and Hey Rosetta. As the frontman of the award-winning band Green & Gold\, he navigated numerous east coast tours and released two albums before shifting his focus to roots and acoustic music during his time at Fred’s Records. Influenced by a diverse range of artists spanning classic rock legends to poetic songwriters\, Len crafts introspective\, lyric-driven compositions exploring themes of ambition\, sorrow\, and personal growth.\nHis upcoming solo album\, “Out Of View\,” slated for release in April 2024\, showcases a dynamic evolution in his sound\, marked by poignant storytelling and vulnerability. Len’s musical journey is deeply intertwined with the vibrant music community of St. John’s\, where the intrinsic value of music is revered. With a vision to tour extensively and create a body of work reflective of his poetic sensibilities\, Len remains committed to expressing his evolving narrative through music\, always eager to engage with captivating stories across various artistic mediums.\n—–\nAccessibility\nHaven Music Hall is a street-level small music venue without fixed seating. This show is combination standing and seating room only. Our entrance exterior is a 34″ wide door that has a small lip/step up from the street. All patrons will be ID’d upon entry and given a coloured bracelet corresponding with their ticket type (19+ or -19). Bartenders will also be checking IDs at the bar. During all ages shows we are careful not to serve multiple drinks to one person\, so if you’re buying your 19+ friend a beer please bring them to the bar to order with you! All ages are welcome but only 19+ patrons with ID’s may purchase alcohol. Patrons aged 15 and under must be accompanied by a guardian.\nSafer Spaces Policy/Code of Conduct\nHaven Music Hall (HMH) is committed to ensuring a safer show experience for musicians\, audiences\, staff\, and volunteers.
