SUMMARY:ECSQ play Beethoven & Shostakovich (Fredericton)
DESCRIPTION:The Elm City String Quartet presents two masterworks; one an early turning point\, and the other a maturation of a lifelong journey. Beethoven’s 14th string quartet is one of the famous “late” quartets\, composed when he was nearing the end of his incredible career. The third string quartet of Shostakovich is seen as the composer’s first great success of imbedding his personality into a quartet piece. It is dark and desolate\, sarcastic\, and heart-breakingly intimate. Both these pieces are profound\, artful\, and deeply personal\, and we can’t wait to share them with you.\nDate: December 1\, 7:30PM\nLocation: Wilmot United Church\, 473 King St\, Fredericton\nTickets:\nAdults: $20 | Seniors: $15 | Students: $10 | Sistema Students & Faculty: Free\nhttps://www.tickettailor.com/…/elmcitystringquartet/992852\nProgram:\nString Quartet No. 14 in C♯ minor\, Op. 131\nL. SUMMARY:ECSQ Play Smith\, Schubert & Wijeratne (Saint John)
DESCRIPTION:Concert 3: ECSQ Play Smith\, Schubert & Wijeratne\nThe ECSQ starts off the new year with some fresh and rocking string quartets. “2 Pop Songs on Antique Poems” by Dinuk Wijerante\, winner of the 2016 JUNO for classical composition of the year\, is a collision of old and new. The beauty and meaning of vintage poems inspire loops\, grooves\, and catchy tunes\, with some recognizable quotes to our concert’s final piece.\n“The day will come when a single\, freshly observed carrot will start a revolution\,” is the inspiration for Gabriella Smith’s captivating work\, Carrot Revolution. The piece travels between flowing fiddle-inspired melodies and crunchy (perhaps like a carrot?) rhythms and percussion. The final piece of the concert\, Schubert’s Death and the Maiden\, is an absolute favourite in the repertoire. Power\, beauty and storytelling are woven with beautifully seamless structure.\nDate: February 1\, 7:30PM\nLocation: Saint John Arts Centre – 20 Peel Plaza\, Saint John\nTickets:\nAdults: $20 | Seniors: $15 | Students: $10 | Sistema Students & Faculty: Free\nAdvance tickets:\nhttps://www.tickettailor.com/events/elmcitystringquartet/997393\nProgram:\n2 Pop Songs on Antique Poems\, by Dinuk Wijeratne (b. 1978)\nI. SUMMARY:Liberté\, Égalité\, Sororité: French Women Composers in early 1900s
DESCRIPTION:Presented as part of MusicUNB’s Forté series\, Nadia Francavilla highlights the women who were ignored in their time.\nThe French women composers featured in this concert worked in the Impressionist tradition of Debussy and Ravel. In a time when music by women composers was rarely performed\, these trailblazers defied expectations\, making their living from their art. But despite their prolific output–more than 300 pieces performed throughout the early 20th century–history has seen their contributions eclipsed by those of their male counterparts. Nadia Francavilla (violin)\, Karin Aurell (flute)\, Carl Philippe Gioinet (piano) and guests present a bold revival of these important but overlooked works\, including Lili Boulanger’s Cortège and Nocturne; Louise Farrenc’s quintet for piano and strings; and Mel Bonis’ suite op. 59 for flute\, violin\, and piano.\n-Nadia Francavilla\, violin\n-Karin Aurell\, flute\n-Carl Philipe Gionet\, piano\n-Mark Kleyn\, violin\n-Emily Kennedy\, cello\n-Andrew Miller\, bass\nTicket Prices:\n$30 Regular\n$15 Student\n$50 Date Night / Family Pass (2 adults plus up to three children)\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/300934512523507/

SUMMARY:ECSQ play Mendelssohn\, Piazzolla & Pärt (Saint John)
DESCRIPTION:Date: March 14\, 7:30PM\nLocation: Saint John Arts Centre – 20 Peel Plaza\, Saint John\nTickets:\nAdults: $20 | Seniors: $15 | Students: $10 | Sistema Students & Faculty: Free\nAdvance tickets: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/elmcitystringquartet/997406\nProgram:\nTango Ballet – Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992)\nSumma – Arvo Pärt (b. 1935)\n– Intermission –\nString Quartet No. 4\, E minor\, Op. 44\, No. 2 – Felix Mendelssohn (1809 – 1847)\nI. Allegro assai appassionato\nII. Scherzo: Allegro di molto\nIII. Andante\nIV. Presto agitato\nThe Elm City String Quartet continues its season with a contrast of minimalism\, romanticism and tango. Piazzolla’s Tango Ballet\, an excellent example of nuevo tango\, was originally written as a film score for an eight-person ensemble (that included two bandoneons\, piano\, and electric guitar!). The work was later rearranged for string quartet as a programmatic suite\, and features six “film scenes”: introduction\, the street\, encounter / forgetfulness\, cabaret\, solitude\, and the street again.\nArvo Pärt’s Summa is inspired by Medieval chant and Renaissance polyphony. Summa was originally composed as an a cappella vocal work for four singers. There is a gentle\, jaunty lilt to the rocking two-note motif that pervades the work with Baroque regularity\, and the repetitions give a spiritual mantra-like dimension to the piece.\nMendelssohn’s Quartet Four is full of virtuosic passion\, charming dance movements\, and intimate romantic lyricism. While these pieces are from different ends of a spectrum\, they all manage to get to the heart of what music is all about\, in their own way.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/751555489919803/

SUMMARY:***LAST 50 TICKETS***Daniel Champagne (Australia) LIVE at Charlotte Street Arts Centre | Fredericton
DESCRIPTION:The young Australian virtuoso returns to Canada for 56 intimate and one of a kind performances across the country!\nMay 31 – Charlotte Street Art Centre\, Fredericton\n7pm doors / 7:30pm show\nTickets (very limited) https://events.humanitix.com/daniel-champagne-australia-live-at-charlotte-street-arts-centre-or-fredericton?_gl=1*1uwzbza*_ga*NTAxODQyNTI0LjE2OTUyMjU3MTI.*_ga_LHKW5FR9N6*MTY5NTczMzAwOS4zLjEuMTY5NTczNDUzNy4zMS4wLjA.\nBIOGRAPHY\nGrowing up in the Bega Valley on the Far South Coast of New South Wales\, Australia the story goes that the young singer-songwriter and one of a kind guitar virtuoso first picked up his instrument of choice as a 5-year-old following in the footsteps of a musical father. He began writing songs at 12\, training classically throughout his teens and performing wherever he could\, honing his craft and developing the dynamite live show that he is renowned for today. At 18 he finished school\, turned professional and hit the road without looking back.\nThe following 15 years have seen him independently release 7 studio albums\, tour relentlessly around the globe\, play some of the biggest festivals under the sun and share stages with the likes of Tommy Emmanuel\, INXS\, John Butler\, Lucinda Williams\, Ani DiFranco\, Judy Collins and Rodrigo y Gabriela.\nHe has been described as “the finest guitar player of this generation”\, “a leading light in acoustic music” and “a performer that must be seen to be believed” and from March to June 2024 he will be touring Canada\, from Vancouver Island in the West out to Newfoundland in the east and 56 towns in between!\nWHAT THE PRESS SAY..\n“The word Prodigy seems to entirely fall short of this soft-spoken young man’s skills\, he coaxes sounds and melodies out of his instrument that literally drop jaws.” The Calgary Herald\, CANADA\n“Today I saw the future of Folk – Festival goers flocking in the thousands towards the main stage to witness a young musical phenomenon from Australia dish out an absolute show-stopper.” The Firefly Column\, USA\n“Daniel Champagne is a crossroads. Fusing the strong traditions of Blues\, Folk and other roots art with pop showmanship and admirable lyrical ability. I firmly believe that he will become an ambassador for roots music in a time where it desperately needs representation.” The Indie Blender\, CANADA\n“reinventing roots guitar” Rhythms Magazine\, AUSTRALIA\n“Watching Daniel Champagne perform is a once in a lifetime experience. He is a true prodigy that plays like no one else could possibly play unless they spent at least two lifetimes studying the art.” BW Review\, NEW ZEALAND\n“Daniel Champagne exudes a natural ease on stage\, as he sings poignant lyrics and beautifully crafted melodies that invariably whisk the heart up with grand romanticism. Coupled with an exhilarating guitar talent that transcends mere acoustic playing to replicate a whole band\, Champagne is just magical” Themusic.com.au\, AUSTRALIA\n“You feel as if he just invented the instrument yesterday and was discovering its possibilities afresh” Ted Gioia (American jazz critic and music historian)\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1158026688918781/

SUMMARY:Eddy Currents LIVE @ Five & Dime
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to have Eddy Currents make his Five & Dime debut on his first-ever Atlantic Canadian tour!\nShow time: 9pm.Cover: PWYC\n—-About Eddy:https://eddycurrents.net/home\nA lifelong musical journey begins when you grow up in a house filled with classical music and the Rolling Stones. Playing an array of instruments from an early age\, a new melody or lyric was always waiting to be scribbled down at a moment’s notice. Several years later and following a decade on the road\, various colorful tales of ordinary lives had been amassed. This epoch would then culminate in the retreat to a Toronto studio where these narratives could be brought to life. Armed with eight tunes surrounded by an air of melancholy\, reflection and hope\, this collection of songs would introduce the original musicality of Eddy Currents to the world.\nInfluenced heavily by the writings of Warren Zevon\, Bruce Springsteen and Neil Peart\, his eponymous debut album was released in 2020. Each of the album’s songs are somewhat reflective of the city in which they were written; from Halifax to Manhattan to Munich. Composed primarily on the piano\, the album weaves between genres throughout. The sounds of Folk\, Celtic\, Rock and Synth-Pop can be found\, where the only constant in the arrangement is the plangent\, lead baritone vocal that narrates these distinctly human accounts.\nThe year 2021 saw the release of two singles\, Crossroad and The Breakline\, both of which continued to build upon the singer-songwriter styling introduced on the debut album and gained him considerable momentum on various Indie Folk playlists. In 2023\, Eddy Currents music was streamed in 140 countries on Spotify alone\, assisted by the release of the first six tracks off of his upcoming album\, Electric Minds. His energetic solo live sets have been engaging audiences all over North America for the past 2 years\, with new dates being consistently added. So\, turn up your amps and stay tuned…\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/966559191732839/
