SUMMARY:Trajectories presents "Quiet on Kökar" with special guest Emily Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:Montréal/Fredericton based electroacoustic composers collective Trajectories will put on a special audiovisual performance with guest composer Emily Kennedy at Saint John Arts Centre on April\, 20\, 2024 to celebrate sights and sounds from their latest project entitled “Quiet on Kökar”. This 9-piece collection of etudes was developed while attending The Åland Archipelago Guest Artist Residence program in Kökar\, Åland\, Finland throughout October 2023. The event itself will consist of live audio performance from Trajectories backed by a video accompaniment containing archival images of Kökar collected from the local museum as well as video documented by the collective throughout their stay.\nThis performance will follow their February 2024 live Canadian debut in Montréal as part of programming by Codes d’accès\, which drew over 100 people. They will also be performing on April 19\, 2024 at Fredericton’s Charlotte Street Arts Centre as part of Connexion ARC’s 40th Anniversary programming\, which will include local soundmakers Emily Kennedy and Counting on Downstairs. In May 2024\, the group will embark on a 1-week creative residency and performance at Sound Art Lab in Struer\, Denmark\, followed by 2 performances in Sweden at the start of June.\nTrajectories Website:\nhttps://www.trajectories.net\nEmily Kennedy Website:\nhttp://www.emily-kennedy.com/\nTrajectories Music:\nhttps://trajectoriescollective.bandcamp.com/album/quiet-on-k-kar\nTrajectories Bio:\nTrajectories is an ensemble of electroacoustic composers and interdisciplinary artists based in Montréal and New Brunswick consisting of Charles Harding\, Malte Leander\, Connor Cook\, and the late Michael Pinsonneault. The collective centers its exploration on a vast array of multi-disciplinary projects that delve into diverse and pertinent themes. Through a dynamic interplay of collaborative insights\, the collective navigates and reflects upon contemporary issues\, events\, and research areas\, with each member’s unique perspective influencing the group’s trajectory and vice versa.\nIn October 2023\, Charles Harding\, Connor Cook\, and Malte Leander participated in the Åland Archipelago Guest Artist Residence program (Kökar\, Åland\, Finland)\, a transformative experience that led to the creation of “Live on Kökar\,” a series of captivating performance videos\, and “Quiet on Kökar\,” an album of etudes released on February 9\, 2024. This 3-week period of intense creativity and reflection also inspired an upcoming documentary short\, chronicling their immersive engagement with Kökar’s history\, community\, ecology\, and environment. This exploration into Kökar’s landscape and heritage has opened new avenues for their practice-based research\, laying the groundwork for exciting developments in their artistic journey.\nMusic Description:\nThe album Quiet on Kökar was conceived of during a recent artist residency undertaken on the small island of Kökar in the Åland Archipelago in Finland\, experimenting with a variety of recording set-ups and collaborative compositional techniques\, following ideas of the non-anthropocentric positioning of the artist\, both at the time of recording\, composing and performing.\nThe island of Kökar is a quiet and serene environment\, located in the middle of the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland\, amongst a grand archipelago called Åland that consists of thousands of tiny and large islands. This particular island is home to approximately 225 people who live in a place accessible exclusively by boat and helicopter. Kökar has a deep spiritual history; having been a point on the Nordic Pilgrimage route “St. Olav Waterway” since at least the 14th century. Small enough to walk across in a few hours\, the island is fiercely exposed to the weather of the sea. At one point during the stay there was a record breaking wind storm that snapped trees and shook the house. It was a very humbling experience and served as a sobering reminder of the unstoppable forces of nature. Through visits to the Kökar museum and communication with residents of the island there were new lessons learned about the vulnerability of the island’s ecosystem as well as the dutiful efforts the community is taking to maintain conscious sustainability in daily life. Throughout its settled history the island has seen many cycles of abundance and scarcity connected to the amount of energy it takes to sustain human populations. The recognition of this vulnerability was ever present while engaging in creative processes during the 3 weeks of the residency.\nThroughout the stay there were efforts made to document expeditions utilizing field recorders\, hydrophones and various cameras to become immersed in the sights and sounds of Kökar. The aim was to nurture gradually emerging artistic themes surrounding the island’s ecological and historical character and\, as a result\, engage in new work with personal meaning amplified by the island’s deeper context. Kökar revealed many things\, sharing reminders of the fragility of ecosystems and the irrevocably intertwined connections between human and non-human agents in even the most remote environments\, awareness of which will be carried forward into future Trajectories work.\nThank you to the Åland Archipelago Guest Artist Residence and to Kökar Hembygdsmuseum.\nWe would like to thank and acknowledge the support of SOCAN Foundation for helping to make this project possible.\nAn important part of this process was the mentorship\, guidance and creative input of the late Michael Pinsonneault\, who was incredibly generous with his time and energy\, and was an essential part of this group from its inception. Before we left for Kökar\, we spoke at length with Michael about the blueprints for what a creative journey like this residency could lead to. We have lost our teacher\, collaborator and friend and wherever he is now\, we wish him the best\, and will keep him in our hearts. The example Michael set will allow us to continue to create with presence\, openness and curiosity\, and we will do so in his honour. Rest in peace M.P.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/937099625086201/

SUMMARY:The landscape of Saint John in 1783
DESCRIPTION:When the Loyalists arrived in Saint John\, the landscape was little changed since the ice age 10\,000 years earlier. It was a combination of rock and swamp\, and largely inhospitable to settlement. SUMMARY:Paul Campbell - It's All About The Love
DESCRIPTION:Paul Campbell\, known to many Frederictonians as an entertainer who has been bringing crowds to the dance floor for decades\, has never considered himself a songwriter. However\, with the chaotic political climate of recent years\, he felt the need to complete his one and only attempt; a song he started to write while vacationing abroad in 1976. It’s now finished\, and in a move that’s very ‘on-brand’ for Campbell\, he has scheduled a celebration in its honor.\nSong For Democracy-1984 Redux finally gets its official debut on Saturday\, June 1st at the Charlotte Street Arts Center\, at the 5th Downtown Blues Band ‘Party For The Planet’. The band will perform two sets\, along with a special video presentation of the new song\, which will be preceded by a brief recorded interview with Campbell\, conducted by MRTI’s Rob Pinnock. The final song of the evening will be Song For Democracy-1984 Redux performed live for the first time in front of an audience.\nAs the long-time front man for Fredericton’s favourite party band\, the Downtown Blues Band\, Campbell has always chosen to keep things non-political\, but Song For Democracy-1984 Redux is Campbell’s anthem of love and hope in a world he feels is heading in the wrong direction for humanity.\nInspired by 1984\, George Orwell’s frightening look into the future\, and set in a totalitarian world\, Campbell seeks out the light of humanity in the form of LOVE\, and calls it out from the darkness as the song rises to its thrilling\, emotional peak.\nTickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Net proceeds will be donated to the purchase of supplies needed to help those displaced by the war in the Ukraine.\nPRESALE for CSAC Members on NOW and general sale will start Monday March 4th.\nDoors open at 7:00PM with show at 7:30PM.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/262052413607400/

SUMMARY:Meeple Meet-Up: Euphoria
DESCRIPTION:Mat and Danielle are back hosting Meeple Meet-Up at Offline on Fridays! Yay! What is Meeple Meet-Up? Let’s get into it! \nWhat is it: A place to make new friends\, learn to play a game\, and hang out! Join us at 6:30pm on Fridays to try a new game (or play an old favourite). No experience or plus one required. There will be people there to teach you the game\, and to play with! The perfect way to meet new friends and play more board games! When: Friday June 7th at 6:30pm\, and every Friday after that! \nWhere: Offline Board Game Cafe\, at Parkway Mall! We have lots of parking and we are an accessible venue. \nWho: You! Your friends! Your family! All are welcome and we are so happy to host you. Please let us know by sending us a message\, commenting or calling us at 506-631-3333 if you intend on coming! \nCost: Just our regular cover price of $5+tax for anyone 12-64 or $3+tax if you’re 2-11 or 65+! Members pay no cover!\nNow let’s get into the game we’re playing this week!\nIn Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia\, you lead a team of workers (dice) and recruits (cards) to claim ownership of the dystopian world. You will generate commodities\, dig tunnels to infiltrate opposing areas\, construct markets\, collect artifacts\, strengthen allegiances\, and fulfill secret agendas.\nEuphoria is a worker-placement game in which dice are your workers. The number on each die represents a worker’s knowledge—that is\, his level of awareness that he’s in a dystopia. Worker knowledge enables various bonuses and impacts player interaction. If the collective knowledge of all of your available workers gets too high\, one of them might desert you. You also have two elite recruit cards at your disposal; one has pledged allegiance to you\, but the other needs some convincing. You can reveal and use the reticent recruit by reaching certain milestones in the game… or by letting other players unwittingly reach those milestones for you.\nYour path to victory is paved with the sweat of your workers\, the strength of your allegiances\, and the tunnels you dig to infiltrate other areas of the world\, but the destination is a land grab in the form of area control. You accomplish this by constructing markets that impose harsh restrictions of personal freedoms upon other players\, changing the face of the game and opening new paths to victory. You can also focus on gathering artifacts from the old world\, objects of leisure that are extremely rare in this utilitarian society. The dystopian elite covet these artifacts—especially matching pairs—and are willing to give you tracts of land in exchange for them.\nFour distinct societies\, each of them waiting for you to rewrite history. What are you willing to sacrifice to build a better dystopia?\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/466796239067370/

SUMMARY:Living Roots- Duke & Goldie/Blaire Nicolle at Hanson Road
DESCRIPTION:An afternoon delight in the flower shopAll ages welcome\, bring your coffee and enjoy some world class music.\nBlaire Nicolle at 1 PMDuke & Goldie at 2 PM\nEntry by donation (suggested $10) or festival pass\nPasses here:https://locarius.io/…/living-roots-music-festival-2024…\nLiving Roots Music Festival recognizes that it is situatedon unceded\, unsurrendered Wolastoqey Territory.\nWalking the line between warm folk storytelling and an upbeat mystical country twang are Vancouver-based duo Duke & Goldie. The musical partnership of Jena “Goldie” Gogo and Eric “The Duke” Duquette\, each longtime members of roots rock band Blue Sky Miners\, has produced an exciting new sound said to “revive the charm of the 60’s and 70’s Laurel Canyon music scene”.\nTheir debut single Courage\, released in February 2023\, has been met with glowing reviews and was promptly featured in Exclaim!’s roundup of the “Best New Canadian Music”. On stage the pair weave their cascading vocal harmonies over acoustic guitar-laden arrangements to tell stories that roam from rocky mountain highs to mysterious remote deserts\, while navigating their roles as settlers in this land. At the heart of it all\, Duke & Goldie’s magnetic chemistry on stage is what continues to captivate audiences wherever they go.\nFredericton singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Blaire Nicolle has become a familiar face on live music stages across New Brunswick\, sharing her own creations as a solo artist\, and lending her musical sensibilities to elevate the songs of others. With a clear voice and a wry wit\, Blaire draws inspiration from real-life circumstances to give her audiences stunning poetic soundscapes that hit at the heart of the human condition.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1071747833892622/

SUMMARY:Documentary Screening- The South by Andrea Ramolo
DESCRIPTION:Doors at 2 PMScreening at 3 PMEntry by donation ($10 suggested) or festival pass\nFollowing the death of her matriarch and beloved grandmother\, The South follows Italian-Canadian recording artist and dancer Andrea Ramolo to the Salento in southern Italy to explore the rich history of its folk music and dance. Director Giuseppe Marco Albano captures Andrea as she uncovers the cultural phenomenon of the tarantate\, the evolution of the pizzica\, and the healing rituals of the south\, and the Salento in particular. The film also follows her and Italian world music band Kalàscima behind-the-scenes as they embark on the recording of a new collaborative Italian album which takes a modern approach to traditional music and honours Andrea’s connection to the land and to her ancestors. Throughout her journey\, Andrea learns from the locals\, like pizzica dancers Lucia Scarabino\, Stefano Campagna\, and Mattia Politti\, the famous polyphonic singers le sorelle Gaballo of Nardò\, and New Jersey based tamburello mentor Alessandra Belloni\, among others. Andrea uses the healing traditions of the past and the south to grieve and heal from her recent loss. As a first generation Italian—Canadian woman\, Andrea is given this unique opportunity to learn from the south\, from the past\, and from the charming and colourful characters she encounters along the way. From legends of spider bites to the healing power of music and dance\, Andrea brings her newfound knowledge of southern Italian tradition back to Canada in a unique and captivating way.\nBIO DIRECTOR:Giuseppe Marco Albano is an award-winning Italian director\, screenwriter and producer. His film Stand By Me won the Silver Ribbon for best Italian short film. In 2013 he was awarded the Massimo Troisi Award for the best comedy short film. In the same year he presented the short film AnnA at the 70th Venice Film Festival.\nIn 2014 he produced\, wrote and directed the short film Thriller\, which premiered at the Giffoni Film Festival. The short\, entirely set in Taranto\, received over 80 national and international awards and won the Davide di Donatello in 2015 for the best Italian short film. In the same year\, together with his closest collaborators\, he established\, Mediterraneo Cinematografica\, an independent film production company. In 2015 he also received the Rodolfo Valentino Award as a young talent of Italian cinema.\nIn February 2016 he became the artistic director of the “Soundies Awards” of Casa Sanremo. SUMMARY:Living Roots- Charlie Weber (ON) at Southside Shake
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to be back on the patio this year for the festival with a variety of music.\nMusic at 7 PMEntry by donation\nFor people who’ve met him London Ontario’s Charlie Weber is known for a few things: Emotionally honest lyricism\, being the loudest person in the room\, and never knowing when to leave a party.\nSince 2013\, Weber’s self-aware songwriting style has allowed him to carve pathways across the country playing upwards of 230 independently booked shows. Weber has graced festival stages\, dive bars and living rooms while following in the footsteps of alt-troubadours like John K. Samson\, Tom Petty\, Frank Turner\, Jeff Rosenstock; using earnestness layered with humour to create a musical catalogue that is sincere while never taking himself too seriously. Ostentatious but vulnerable\, callous and compassionate\, Charlie Weber & the Glorious Failures seamlessly pair cynicism with hopefulness through their lens of punk rock laden Americana\, creating high energy rock n roll anthems that will touch your heart.\nIn 2018\, Weber released his first LP “Old Habits” through London Ontario’s indie label Forest City Records. Touring vigorously until being cut off at the knees by the global pandemic. Weber went into hiding from the invisible plague and got down to writing his second LP\, but he knew he would need help when it came time to record. Weber gathered his friends from some of Ontario’s most renowned (and more successful) acts (Pkew Pkew Pkew\, Wolf Saga\, Stuck Out Here\, Averages) and formed the super group now known as The Glorious Failures. Together with their unbreakable bond matched with their combined 100 years of musical know-how the band formed like a mystical ninja robot from a early 90’s Japanese kids program and recorded what will surly go down in the history books as “THE GREATEST INDEPENDENT CANADIAN RECORD OF ALL TIME!”\nCharlie Weber & the Glorious Failure’s sophomore LP “Gold Never Stays” is set for release in Spring of 2023.\nThe albums first single “Sadder/Louder” is out on streaming platforms and accompanied by a music video directed by award winning and acclaimed Canadian videographer Danny Dunlop of Black Wave Productions and can be viewed on Youtube.\nWe could go further into the bands career as professional unicorn wranglers or their stint as volunteer dragon fighters but I think it’s important to stay focused on the music. If you want to know more about their acts of mythical bravery you’ll have to come see them live in a city near you!\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/2704138849733509/
