SUMMARY:THE PEOPLE'S JOKER Film Screening & Costume Party!
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Imperial Theatre\, Haven Music Hall is pleased to present a screening of the revolutionary DIY parody film THE PEOPLE’S JOKER on August 15! This screening is also a COSTUME PARTY and contest\, so dress up as your favourite/least favourite Gotham character and you just might win a prize!\nTickets $15\nDoors 8pm\, showtime 8:30pm\nTHE PEOPLE’S JOKER!\nThis revolutionary DIY parody film and hilarious reimagining of the classic autobiographical coming-of-age story follows an unconfident\, closeted trans girl as she moves to Gotham City to make it big as a comedian by joining the cast of UCB Live – a government-sanctioned late night sketch show in a world where comedy has been outlawed. As mainstream success eludes our heroine\, leading her to unite with a ragtag team of rejects\, misfits\, and a certain love interest named Mister J\, “Joker the Harlequin” is born again as a confident (and psychotic) joker on a collision course with the city’s fascist caped crusader. Vats of feminizing chemicals\, sexy cartoon interludes\, scarecrow psychiatrists\, CGI Lorne Michaels\, and psychedelic gender dysphoria all play supporting roles. Helmed by writer/director/editor/star Vera Drew and using her own life experiences as a basis for the film\, THE PEOPLE’S JOKER is a deeply personal journey that’s as much documentary as it is parody.\nTHE PEOPLE’S JOKER features a superhero-sized cast of celebrated comedic talent in both voice and live action roles behind the vibrant kaleidoscope of characters that lampoon the iconic heroes and villains of the DC comics’ world\, featuring cameos from comedy multi-hyphenate Tim Heidecker\, award-winning actor Bob Odenkirk\, Maria Bamford (Netflix’s Big Mouth\, Adult Swim’s Teenage Euthanasia)\, and Scott Aukerman (Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis co-creator and host of the Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast)\, with Vera Drew\, Lynn Downey (Amazon Prime Video’s Daisy Jones & The Six)\, Nathan Faustyn (SADDLED)\, and Kane Distler\, in his film debut as Mister J.\nThis screening is a COSTUME PARTY!! Dress up as your favourite/least favourite Gotham character’ to win a prize!\n—\nAccessibility:\nHaven Music Hall is a street-level small music venue without fixed seating. SUMMARY:Jon McKiel/Dusted (holy fuck)/Owen Steel
DESCRIPTION:All ages show featuring the amazing Jon McKiel\, Dusted (Brian Borcherdt of Holy Fuck) and Owen Steel. All ages\, $15 advance $20 at the door.\nDoors 8pm/Show 9pm\nJon Mckiel returns with a highly anticipated new album\, the long-awaited follow-up to his underground classic Bobby Joe Hope!\nThe songs of Jon McKiel are born of the bruised marshlands of remote New Brunswick\, from the craggy shores of the Atlantic coast; places where nature is a powerful wonder and the made-world is in slow decay. His new album\, Hex\, is a bloodshot pop record steeped in our dystopian present\, tempered\, across its ten tracks\, by an existential umami.\nBrian Borcherdt aka Dusted is best known as founding member of the Polaris Prize-shortlisted electro-experimental band Holy Fuck.\nThis project serves as a vehicle for more traditional songwriting\, although the sound retains many of the experimental elements he’s become known for. Dusted III offers a meditation on change and rebirth that all of us can relate to at this moment.\n“Steel has never failed to capture his audience’s attention with his own special blend of folk\, psychedelia\, and experimental bits and bites\, woven together in patchwork fashion…There is a timeless quality in much of what he does. He is an old soul. Maybe there is a connection there. A formula few have discovered. Whatever the case may be\, Steel has a new album and it is everything fans of his music could hope for.” – Matt Carter for Grid City Magazine.\n——\nAccessibility\nHaven Music Hall is a street-level small music venue without fixed seating. SUMMARY:Valmy & Catherine Kennedy at Haven Music Hall!
DESCRIPTION:If you love moving vocalists and skilled instrumentalism\, this evening with Valmy and Catherine Kennedy is not to be missed!! All ages\, $15 adv/$20 at the door. Doors 7:30\, show 8pm!\nValmy is Newfoundland-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Ontario who’s been following the ocean and making home on the East Coast. Exploring themes of wonder\, loss\, and healing\, she uses her folk-influenced music to tell stories about loving and stumbling your way through the dark.\, Valmy creates and performs by weaving nature-inspired melodic swells and atmospheric harmonies with her contemplative writing.\nThis is demonstrated through her debut full-length album ‘The In Between’\, independently released in September 2023 and warmly received by listeners\, with a thoughtful review by Tony Ploughman of Fred’s Records: “The rhythms and melodies wrap around the mind and soul like a lovingly patched quilt…There is a cohesiveness to this full album offering meditative musings on balancing one’s own mental state in harmony with nature\, the songs providing a methodical process to achieve that balance. And the underlying intensity to follow through on the beckoning of one’s thoughts and emotions to create is constant…Deftly produced\, engineered and mixed\, “The In Between” is one of 2023’s finest NL Releases”.\n.\nAward-winning singer-songwriter Catherine Kennedy invites you to join her on the long way home. Any story worth telling deserves the time it takes to travel along the nostalgic route\, and Catherine’s soulful lyrics and bluesy tones will transport you directly there.\nOne music-lover praised how “the beautiful quality and range of Catherine’s voice pairs perfectly with her gift of storytelling. Catherine’s music makes you feel part of something bigger. Her songs always seem as though they’re written for you.”\nFollowing hot on the heel’s of Catherine Kennedy’s Harvest Jazz and Blues performance (with McKinley\, Morrison & Williams) opening for the legendary Victor Wooten & the Wooten Brothers\, come out to hear her on the Haven Music Hall stage!\n———–\nAccessibility\nHaven Music Hall is a street-level small music venue without fixed seating. SUMMARY:Yoo Doo Right/Ky
DESCRIPTION:Experimental rock trio Yoo Doo Right (Montréal\, CA) wed noisy\, melodic guitar parts\, effects-laden synthesizer soundscapes\, deep bass grooves and patented percussive furies into sprawling\, cathartic musical pieces. Drawing inspiration from post-rock\, krautrock\, shoegaze\, classical music\, electroacoustics\, and musique concrète\, they create a unique sound where “towering monoliths of roaring riffs crash against swarms of restless rhythms” (Pop Matters). Since 2016\, they have released two full-lengths (Don’t Think You Can Escape Your Purpose\, A Murmur\, Boundless to the East)\, three EPs (Nobody Panicked and Everybody Got On\, EP2\, The Sacred Fuck EP)\, and a few singles\, including a 7” split with Acid Mothers Temple\, whilst touring extensively in Canada\, the United and Europe. Along the way\, they have performed at notorious events such as SXSW\, Levitation\, Dunk! Fest\, Sled Island\, Treefort Music Fest\, and M for Montreal\, also opening for the likes of Acid Mothers Temple\, DIIV\, A Place to Bury Strangers\, Wooden Shjips\, Kikagaku Moyo\, FACS\, and Jessica. Scheduled for November 8th\, 2024 via Mothland\, From the Heights of Our Pastureland is yet another solemn if defiant entry in Yoo Doo Right’s rich music catalogue\, an honest and patient sonic poem about the destructive process of unbridled expansion in the name of “progress”\, the inevitable collapse and what it means to rebuild. \nKy is the new “solo” project of Ky Brooks\, best known as vocalist and lyricist of noise-punk trio Lungbutter and a slew of other Montréal-based out-music projects like 8-person queer punk band Femmaggots and experimental/improv trio Nag. Their 2023 debut\, Power Is The Pharmacy\, is an album of cerebral and visceral outsider artpunk “mainly about grief\, death\, the fear of loss\, losing dreams\, losing youth\, people\, public space\, ultimately oneself”—an emotionally electrifying\, genre-spanning collection of songs fuelled by Ky’s piercing poetry\, both spoken and sung\, that delivers an acute blend of incisive socio-political observation and spiritual sadness\, swirling through vortices of disenchantment and re-enchantment. \nDoors 7pm/show 8pm \nall ages \nAdvance $15/Door $20 \nTickets on sale now! \nAccessibility  \nHaven Music Hall is a street-level small music venue without fixed seating. SUMMARY:DahL + Shriven + Doctor Mother Father at Haven Music Hall
DESCRIPTION:doors 7pm / show 8pm\n12 adv / 15 door\nDahL (Montréal)\nhttps://dahlband.bandcamp.com/album/thats-it\nDahL is an experimental pop outfit based in Montreal who combine elements of 90’s trip hop\, post-punk\, and art rock. The founding members\, Bryan and Nassir are originally from Calgary\, Alberta and have collaborated on music\, writing\, and videos for over a decade. DahL’s music creates a foundation of syncopated rhythm and sonic texture to form fluid structures that find their cadence through space\, patience\, and story. Liselle’s captivating lyrics suggest settings that are often urban and self-reflective in its social commentary. DahL brings an unapologetic energy that perfectly catches the listener off guard with a live performance that engages a sense of playfulness and cynicism\, encouraging the carefree moment.\n2024 has seen DahL release their first full-length album “That’s It” as well as perform at Fredericton’s Shivering Songs\, Montreal’s Taverne Tour\, No Signal Fest\, and Ottawa’s Side by Side Weekend.\nShriven (Fredericton)\nhttps://shriven.bandcamp.com/album/saints-rest\nShriven is NB’s newest rock band made by Carter Boyle\, Blake Creamer\, and Charles Harding. Somber songs for friends and foes of Cellarghost\, a similar sounding outfit with similar members from the days of old. Shriven is set to release their first single on Nov. 1\, 2024!\nDoctor Mother Father (Saint John)\nhttps://doctormotherfather.bandcamp.com/album/feelin-fine\nAccessibility\nHaven Music Hall is a street-level small music venue without fixed seating. DESCRIPTION:Come out to Haven Music Hall on November 22 for this transportive and beautiful evening featuring SCIONS and DENMOTHER!\nAll ages\, advance tickets $18\, $20 at the door.\nDoors 7pm/show 8pm\nScions features members from the award-winning minimalist chamber-jazz quartet New Hermitage\, the Polaris-nominated drone-hymn duo Joyful Joyful\, and the acclaimed producer and composer Michael Cloud Duguay. Their collaboration began at the Sappyfest music festival in Sackville\, New Brunswick\, in August 2022. During this event\, New Hermitage and Joyful Joyful connected for the first time and teamed up with Duguay for an improvisational performance based on his songwriting. The enthusiastic response\, capped by a standing ovation\, solidified the ensemble’s decision to pursue the project further\, with Duguay deftly shifting from front-person to producer and musical director.\nDenMother is the electronic music project of Canadian singer-songwriter Sabarah Pilon. Patrons aged 15 and under must be accompanied by a guardian.\nSafer Spaces Policy/Code of Conduct\nHaven Music Hall (HMH) is committed to ensuring a safer show experience for musicians\, audiences\, staff\, and volunteers. If you see or experience any form of harassment or abuse please inform the bar staff on site. If you experience harassment or abuse and wish to inform us after the fact please email abigail@havenmusichall.com. This email is read by the HMH owners only and any reports of safety violations will be treated as confidential. Incidents that are reported in real time are written up by the handling staff member and are confidential and kept on file. Abuse and harassment of an audience member\, musician\, HMH staff\, security\, or volunteers will result in immediate ejection from the premises\, potential probationary period\, and potential banning from the premises. As event coordinators we prioritize the experiences of the musicians\, staff\, and audience members\, so patrons who are being disruptive to the performance or bothering staff will be asked to stop their disruptive actions\, and may/or be asked to leave the premises.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/567920505613198/
