DESCRIPTION:Kevin Drew + Thanya Iyer at Wilmot United Church\nDoors 7pm / Show 8pm\nAll Ages\n‘Aging’\, the third solo album from Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew\, was the inevitable title of his meditative new record – because he was living everything that comes with it. Influenced by the recent passing of friends and mentors\, as well as the declining health of close family\, ‘Aging’ brings together songs written over a decade marked by the signifiers of midlife – love\, loss\, and illness – all while wrestling with the hard truths of aging.\nThe album’s 8-song collection of minimalist piano ballads is darker and more contemplative than anything Drew has released before. Across the 33-minutes can be found the spirit of Drew classics like “Lover’s Spit” and “Sweetest Kill\,” but with a sense of sorrow rarely heard on previous material. DESCRIPTION:Pallmer + Pompey at Beaverbrook Art Gallery\nDoors 5:30PM / Show 6PM\nAll Ages – FREE\nPallmer is a chamber-pop project born from late night improv sessions during a particularly snowy winter in Fredericton\, New Brunswick. Using a cello and viola\, the band’s music melds their love of songwriting with their classical training\, using loopers and effects to expand the possibilities of their wooden instruments. Pallmer’s most recent release\, “Quiet Clapping” won Recording of the Year at the 2021 Prix MNB Awards. The collection of five songs were recorded in a large dance studio at the back of a church-converted-to-arts centre\, taking advantage of its natural resonance\, and embracing the occasional noises from old water heating. Pallmer released a limited edition\, double-header vinyl run of “Quiet Clapping” & their 2019 release\, “Grass Garden” on April 9th\, 2022.\nPompey’s songwriting is fuelled by an ongoing search for comfort. In their music\, as well as in their busy lives of juggling careers and motherhood\, alongside the creative impulses of being part of a vocal group\, harmony is essential. Together\, Justine Everett\, Juanita Bourque and Sylvia Reentovich hold the focus as they seamlessly weave three part harmonies into every song they sing. From their growing list of originals\, that speak through the lens of life as a woman in today’s world\, to thoughtful cover material plucked from heritage artists who have shaped their sound through the forge of influence\, Les Chanterelles find a way to apply their own style and charm to the music they perform.\nDuring their brief history\, Les Chanterelles have already performed a highly anticipated Harvest Music debut in 2021. Not since 2012’s Come Home to Mama has a Martha Wainwright record been so full of original written material. Wainwright’s fifth studio album follows recent years of loneliness and clarity in search of optimism and joy.\nWainwright wrote the first song—and what would become the title track— of the record a few years ago. It was a very dark time\, she says\, but the positivity and luminosity of “Love Will Be Reborn” signalled what was to come. The song simply poured out of her.\nMuch of Wainwright’s songwriting since 2016’s Goodnight City felt too raw. “There were several years where I picked up the guitar\, and I was so\, so sad and depressing. I would just put it down because I was terrible.” Before writing it out\, or writing through it for catharsis\, Wainwright had to live it. Album opener “Middle of the Lake” reinforces Wainwright’s path forward as she sings over voltaic chords and percussion\, “I sing my songs of love and pain / Winds of change or simply singing\, I’m singing in the rain.” Her work never shies away from an existential throbbing wound. “There are a couple major subjects on the record. From what I can tell\, there’s really dark and then light\,” she says\,” It really is reflective of a very difficult period of divorce. Then\, after that\, it’s meeting somebody new and amazing. Through eight masterful yarns\, the songwriter bears witness and pays tribute to a tradition of desperation: sinners and losers\, perpetual failures\, and down-and-out phantoms that haunt his home’s coastlines and back roads – without a passing judgement. Some of the tales happened\, some didn’t\, and most walk a tightrope between truth and fiction. “I feel like a lot of these stories just kinda flew in on the west wind off Porter’s Lake or off the Atlantic Ocean here\,” Baldwin says. “And there’s a lot of stories to be told. Just from livin’ out here\, some of the people you meet – there’re some hard\, hard men and women out here who worked their asses off out on the ocean for decades. They’re different types of people\, man\, and they’ve got different stories to tell\, and I felt like they’d been left out of our song writing tradition for a few years.” In Baldwin’s voice – salty with the flavour of a dialect he comes by honestly – those stories are done justice. The uneasy folk of “Causeway Road” strums out a family fishing tragedy and Danny Fingers’ subsequent botched revenge; a ghost calls out to his wife from the bottom of a collapsed Springhill mine on the gossamer “No. 2 Colliery;” and across the water\, a soldier reflects in the lonesome “A Plea to St. Peter.” It’s not all sorrow and tragedy\, but no one’s winning the lottery\, either – unless you count getting lucky\, like the gas jockey on the upbeat “Gerald Burgess RaceTrac Full Serve Autobody\,” or nearly outrunning the cops\, post-stickup on the rollicking “Good Gracious.” In the shadowy “Gone to the Dogs\,” Baldwin tells the story of a kid forsaken by God not once but twice. And with the dreamy “Lighthouse in Little Lorraine\,” he weaves an epic of drugs\, betrayal\, and murder at the edge of Cape Breton. As the protagonist and his sauced crew get booted from a church hall dance\, you can almost hear “The Mull River Shuffle” float out the door\, too – the other side of being\, “halfway through a bottle of moonshine\, getting all fired up.”\nBad ideas\, VCRs\, crumbling factories\, terrible therapists\, hairy dogs\, wrinkled shirts\, French fries\, questionable tattoos…all are fair game for Nova Scotian funeral director-turned-songwriter Terra Spencer. And the songs are good ones\, judging from the stack of awards her three albums have received and from the caliber of collaborators like Ben Caplan\, Dave Gunning\, and David Francey\, who welcomed Terra as a co-writer and performer on his JUNO-winning album The Breath Between. Terra has just released her fourth solo album\, ‘Sunset’\, which she will be touring across Canada in 2024/25 with her first US dates. Its dozen songs feature guests from East to West – Matt Andersen\, The Bombadils\, Ryan Cook\, Ian Sherwood\, Pillow Fite\, and Stephen Fearing. Her duet with Stewart Legere called “Brick and Mortar” was named the winner of the Commonwealth Song Contest out of 20\,000 entries. Brian and Loel met while Brian was a record store employee and Loel was a fifteen year old aspiring drummer. Both were from ‘the sticks’ and both wanted to find\nsome kind of community. They made the first Holy Fuck records together and were later joined by Matt ‘punchy’ McQuaid on bass. Once scattered and no longer playing together professionally\, they convened as friends in Montreal to make late night noisy confessions. New Brunswick-born Acadians Julie Aubé\, Katrine Noël and Vivianne Roy were friends before joining their voices to a common project and thus strengthening the bonds that unite them through the music they create—as long as fun comes before work\, and work is done while having fun\nKaia Kater’s new album\, Strange Medicine (coming May 2024 on Free Dirt Records)\, opens with a haunting vision. Accompanied by Aoife O’Donovan\, Kater sings of the women burned at the stake as witches in 17th century Salem\, Massachusetts and their wish to strike back: “I dreamt I moved through you and / Burned my name into your chest”. It’s an opening salvo from an album that celebrates the power of women and oppressed people throughout history as they rise up and turn the poison of centuries of oppression into a strange kind of medicine. Kater’s songs are dialogues with these historical figures and meditations on her own modern life as well. In the years since her 2018 album\, Grenades\, on Smithsonian Folkways\, Kater has taken time to reinvent herself and hone her skills\, first attending film school to learn composition\, then diving deeper into her songwriting to come up with her most personal album yet. Feeling the pressure as a talented young songwriter\, banjo player\, and bandleader with three successful albums and an NPR Tiny Desk Concert under her belt\, Kater struggled initially with the expectations of her adopted genre\, Americana. “I was factoring everybody else’s perception into my songwriting\,” she says. “Would I write more honestly if I knew that no one would ever hear this?” With that in mind\, Kater retreated to her apartment in Montréal. Sitting at home with her banjo\, the songs unfolded in personal intimacy\, revealing windows into the perspective of women and revolutionaries through history. Co-producing with Joe Grass (Elisapie\, The Barr Brothers)\, Kater invited close friends and colleagues O’Donovan and Allison Russell to sing on the album\, along with longtime hero and American legend Taj Mahal. With lush arrangements and unexpected musical ideas drawn from genres as surprising as minimalist composition\, jazz drumming\, and film scores\, Strange Medicine is the bold next step in Kater’s career. It’s an album made beyond the white gaze of Americana\, unbeholden to a music industry that so often tokenizes and silences marginalized voices\, a Black Feminist perspective on a genre that refuses to cede power to Black women. But ultimately it’s a celebration of the self.
