SUMMARY:Kevin Drew + Thanya Iyer at Shivering Songs 2024
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Drew + Thanya Iyer at Wilmot United Church\nDoors 7pm / Show 8pm\nAll Ages\n‘Aging’\, the third solo album from Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew\, was the inevitable title of his meditative new record – because he was living everything that comes with it. Influenced by the recent passing of friends and mentors\, as well as the declining health of close family\, ‘Aging’ brings together songs written over a decade marked by the signifiers of midlife – love\, loss\, and illness – all while wrestling with the hard truths of aging.\nThe album’s 8-song collection of minimalist piano ballads is darker and more contemplative than anything Drew has released before. Across the 33-minutes can be found the spirit of Drew classics like “Lover’s Spit” and “Sweetest Kill\,” but with a sense of sorrow rarely heard on previous material. The writer of some of indie rock’s most life-affirming and celebratory anthems has become world sick.\nThe themes that have preoccupied much of Drew’s two-decades-long career are still present – the power of love\, resisting apathy\, the pursuit of connection – but the subject matter once exclaimed with the youthful fervour of a wide-eyed idealist now carries the weight of someone trying to make sense of the world in the throes of grief.\nA midwinter celebration of songwriting and storytelling\, and flagship partner of Fredericton FROSTival\, Shivering Songs hosts internationally renowned artists in historic and intimate spaces throughout Downtown Fredericton\, on the unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik people.\n———————————————————————-\nNotes on Accessibility:\nShivering Songs is actively working to improve festival accessibility We welcome all feedback and encourage you to reach out with any questions\, comments\, or concerns.\nAt this time in all venues we strongly encourage masking and sanitizing.\nTicket Refund Policy:\nTicket buyers can request a refund (up to 48 hours before performance) with one exception\, the payment processor will withhold a 10% processing fee. Refunds will be issued to the original method of payment used at time of purchase. If an event is rescheduled or canceled ticket buyers will be notified with options including a refund.\nIf you require a refund option within 48 hours of the event we can offer you credit to a future show.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/330880072902200/

SUMMARY:Travis Flynn + Pallmer + Pompey at Shivering Songs 2024
DESCRIPTION:Pallmer + Pompey at Beaverbrook Art Gallery\nDoors 5:30PM / Show 6PM\nAll Ages – FREE\nPallmer is a chamber-pop project born from late night improv sessions during a particularly snowy winter in Fredericton\, New Brunswick. Using a cello and viola\, the band’s music melds their love of songwriting with their classical training\, using loopers and effects to expand the possibilities of their wooden instruments. Pallmer’s most recent release\, “Quiet Clapping” won Recording of the Year at the 2021 Prix MNB Awards. The collection of five songs were recorded in a large dance studio at the back of a church-converted-to-arts centre\, taking advantage of its natural resonance\, and embracing the occasional noises from old water heating. Pallmer released a limited edition\, double-header vinyl run of “Quiet Clapping” & their 2019 release\, “Grass Garden” on April 9th\, 2022.\nPompey’s songwriting is fuelled by an ongoing search for comfort. Sometimes it works but often\, it unearths a hidden\, less comfortable truth that usually ends up being a better song.\nA midwinter celebration of songwriting and storytelling\, and flagship partner of Fredericton FROSTival\, Shivering Songs hosts internationally renowned artists in historic and intimate spaces throughout Downtown Fredericton\, on the unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik people.\n\n———————————————————————-\n\nNotes on Accessibility:\nShivering Songs is actively working to improve festival accessibility We welcome all feedback and encourage you to reach out with any questions\, comments\, or concerns.\nAt this time in all venues we strongly encourage masking and sanitizing.\n\nTicket Refund Policy:\nTicket buyers can request a refund (up to 48 hours before performance) with one exception\, the payment processor will withhold a 10% processing fee. SUMMARY:Les Chanterelles + The Hello Crows: The MRTI Agency showcase at Shivering Songs 2024
DESCRIPTION:The MRTI Agency showcase featuring Les Chanterelles + The Hello Crows at Charlotte Street Arts Center\nDoors 6PM / Show 7PM\nAll Ages\nLes Chanterelles\nHarmony is everything to Les Chanterelles\, and that extends far beyond the tightly woven vocals that have become synonymous with this trio. In their music\, as well as in their busy lives of juggling careers and motherhood\, alongside the creative impulses of being part of a vocal group\, harmony is essential. Together\, Justine Everett\, Juanita Bourque and Sylvia Reentovich hold the focus as they seamlessly weave three part harmonies into every song they sing. From their growing list of originals\, that speak through the lens of life as a woman in today’s world\, to thoughtful cover material plucked from heritage artists who have shaped their sound through the forge of influence\, Les Chanterelles find a way to apply their own style and charm to the music they perform.\nDuring their brief history\, Les Chanterelles have already performed a highly anticipated Harvest Music debut in 2021. Earlier that same year they were also featured on CBC’s East Coast Hour\, during their Story and The Song series\, where they contributed an original composition. In May 2022 they released their debut EP to a positive reception.\nAt the end of the day\, Les Chanterelles goals and ambitions are honestly humble. They want to continue as writers–delivering songs of connection. They know that as they travel to share their stories through song\, they will no doubt meet great people about whom they’ll write more songs.\nThe Hello Crows\nLessons from the past\, anthems for the present\, and hope in the future where truth is realized— that clear-sightedness combined with cautious optimism says a lot about what The Hello Crows are hoping to accomplish. They are not only a group of highly talented Wabanaki songwriters and storytellers\, but together they stand as a collective voice representing both their people and generation simultaneously.\nFormed in 2022\, Judie Acquin\, Dylan Ward\, Mattie Comeau and Quinn Bonnell originally appeared together when they were all booked together as a Wabanaki songwriter circle. Sharing the stage\, the chemistry quickly became obvious. Not only were they all a natural fit for one another\, but their combined voices only proved to further amplify their powerful messages. In that instant\, making this a more permanent lineup was the only logical ‘next move’.\nWith The Hello Crows\, the aim is to educate audiences about their beautiful culture\, history and the positive things happening within their communities\, meanwhile honestly sharing the social obstacles in place today. Within the group\, we not only learn of the indigenous cultures\, values and traditions\, but also gain the perspectives of indigenous women and the LQBTQIA2+ communities as well\, making The Hello Crows one of the most important acts working in Canada right now.\nCelebrate the spirit of healing\, humour and fortitude with The Hello Crows and their journey of putting the modern Indigenous experience and landscape to story and song. For further info\, press and booking opportunities contact The MRTI Agency.\nA midwinter celebration of songwriting and storytelling\, and flagship partner of Fredericton FROSTival\, Shivering Songs hosts internationally renowned artists in historic and intimate spaces throughout Downtown Fredericton\, on the unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik people.\n———————————————————————-\nNotes on Accessibility:\nShivering Songs is actively working to improve festival accessibility We welcome all feedback and encourage you to reach out with any questions\, comments\, or concerns.\nAt this time in all venues we strongly encourage masking and sanitizing.\nTicket Refund Policy:\nTicket buyers can request a refund (up to 48 hours before performance) with one exception\, the payment processor will withhold a 10% processing fee. SUMMARY:Shivering Songs: Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds Tribute with Stephen Lewis & Bobby Mahar
DESCRIPTION:Shivering Songs is pleased to present A Tribute to Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds featuring Stephen Lewis and Bobby Mahar on Thursday\, Jan. 18th @ 7:30pm\, at The Fredericton Playhouse. Proceeds from this performance will be donated towards funding summer camp experiences for vulnerable/at-risk youth and children at Bar None Camp in 2024.\nStephen Lewis and Bobby Mahar first started playing Dave Matthews songs together when they met in high school nearly 20 years ago. Their combined love for the intricacies of the ways both Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds weave intoxicating stories together through lyrics\, song\, and melody formed an unbreakable musical connection and a lifelong friendship. Through this friendship\, they became dedicated to honoring the songs that first brought them together by paying tribute in the truest form of their musical heroes (Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds)\, while incorporating just the right amount of themselves into each song to make the concert experience truly unique and memorable.\nThis performance is deeply meaningful for both Stephen and Bobby as they join forces and celebrate their friendship through this exceptional tribute. What sets it apart is its ability to transcend the typical musical performance\, offering more than the normal concert experience – by contributing to the creation of joy\, adventure\, and unforgettable experiences for not only those in attendance but also for at-risk youth and children who otherwise might not have the chance to participate in summer camp in their lifetime.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/318855124313410/

SUMMARY:Martha Wainright + Bells Larsen at Shivering Songs 2024
DESCRIPTION:Martha Wainright + Bells Larsen at Wilmot United Church\nDoors 7pm / Show 8pm\nAll Ages\nMartha Wainwright is beginning again.\nThe beguiling performer and songwriter returns with Love Will Be Reborn\, out in August. Not since 2012’s Come Home to Mama has a Martha Wainwright record been so full of original written material. Wainwright’s fifth studio album follows recent years of loneliness and clarity in search of optimism and joy.\nWainwright wrote the first song—and what would become the title track— of the record a few years ago. It was a very dark time\, she says\, but the positivity and luminosity of “Love Will Be Reborn” signalled what was to come. The song simply poured out of her.\nMuch of Wainwright’s songwriting since 2016’s Goodnight City felt too raw. “There were several years where I picked up the guitar\, and I was so\, so sad and depressing. I would just put it down because I was terrible.” Before writing it out\, or writing through it for catharsis\, Wainwright had to live it. Album opener “Middle of the Lake” reinforces Wainwright’s path forward as she sings over voltaic chords and percussion\, “I sing my songs of love and pain / Winds of change or simply singing\, I’m singing in the rain.” Her work never shies away from an existential throbbing wound. “There are a couple major subjects on the record. From what I can tell\, there’s really dark and then light\,” she says\,” It really is reflective of a very difficult period of divorce. Then\, after that\, it’s meeting somebody new and amazing. And so you hear certain songs about this new love.”\nA midwinter celebration of songwriting and storytelling\, and flagship partner of Fredericton FROSTival\, Shivering Songs hosts internationally renowned artists in historic and intimate spaces throughout Downtown Fredericton\, on the unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik people.\n———————————————————————-\nNotes on Accessibility:\nShivering Songs is actively working to improve festival accessibility We welcome all feedback and encourage you to reach out with any questions\, comments\, or concerns.\nAt this time in all venues we strongly encourage masking and sanitizing.\nTicket Refund Policy:\nTicket buyers can request a refund (up to 48 hours before performance) with one exception\, the payment processor will withhold a 10% processing fee. Refunds will be issued to the original method of payment used at time of purchase. SUMMARY:Adam Baldwin + Terra Spencer at Wilmot United Church SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Adam Baldwin + Terra Spencer at Wilmot United Church\nDoors 7pm / Show 8pm\nAll Ages\nTickets + Passes: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/shiveringsongs?\nPasses grant access to all events including The Fredericton Playhouse.\nWith his sophomore full-length\, Concertos & Serenades\, Adam Baldwin – born and raised “inside these imaginary lines” that denote Nova Scotia – offers an east coast testimony that challenges the typical tourism marketing gloss. Through eight masterful yarns\, the songwriter bears witness and pays tribute to a tradition of desperation: sinners and losers\, perpetual failures\, and down-and-out phantoms that haunt his home’s coastlines and back roads – without a passing judgement. Some of the tales happened\, some didn’t\, and most walk a tightrope between truth and fiction. “I feel like a lot of these stories just kinda flew in on the west wind off Porter’s Lake or off the Atlantic Ocean here\,” Baldwin says. “And there’s a lot of stories to be told. Just from livin’ out here\, some of the people you meet – there’re some hard\, hard men and women out here who worked their asses off out on the ocean for decades. They’re different types of people\, man\, and they’ve got different stories to tell\, and I felt like they’d been left out of our song writing tradition for a few years.” In Baldwin’s voice – salty with the flavour of a dialect he comes by honestly – those stories are done justice. The uneasy folk of “Causeway Road” strums out a family fishing tragedy and Danny Fingers’ subsequent botched revenge; a ghost calls out to his wife from the bottom of a collapsed Springhill mine on the gossamer “No. 2 Colliery;” and across the water\, a soldier reflects in the lonesome “A Plea to St. Peter.” It’s not all sorrow and tragedy\, but no one’s winning the lottery\, either – unless you count getting lucky\, like the gas jockey on the upbeat “Gerald Burgess RaceTrac Full Serve Autobody\,” or nearly outrunning the cops\, post-stickup on the rollicking “Good Gracious.” In the shadowy “Gone to the Dogs\,” Baldwin tells the story of a kid forsaken by God not once but twice. And with the dreamy “Lighthouse in Little Lorraine\,” he weaves an epic of drugs\, betrayal\, and murder at the edge of Cape Breton. As the protagonist and his sauced crew get booted from a church hall dance\, you can almost hear “The Mull River Shuffle” float out the door\, too – the other side of being\, “halfway through a bottle of moonshine\, getting all fired up.”\nBad ideas\, VCRs\, crumbling factories\, terrible therapists\, hairy dogs\, wrinkled shirts\, French fries\, questionable tattoos…all are fair game for Nova Scotian funeral director-turned-songwriter Terra Spencer. And the songs are good ones\, judging from the stack of awards her three albums have received and from the caliber of collaborators like Ben Caplan\, Dave Gunning\, and David Francey\, who welcomed Terra as a co-writer and performer on his JUNO-winning album The Breath Between. Terra has just released her fourth solo album\, ‘Sunset’\, which she will be touring across Canada in 2024/25 with her first US dates. Its dozen songs feature guests from East to West – Matt Andersen\, The Bombadils\, Ryan Cook\, Ian Sherwood\, Pillow Fite\, and Stephen Fearing. Her duet with Stewart Legere called “Brick and Mortar” was named the winner of the Commonwealth Song Contest out of 20\,000 entries. Although her butterscotch voice\, deft fingerstyle guitar\, and gospel-charged piano make her a formidable musician\, it’s her onstage ease and crackling homespun wit that make each show feel like a knee-to-knee conversation in a room of 5 or 500. “The real deal.” – Ron Sexsmith\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1092038472319512/

Avec le troisième\, on s’enligne sur l’oracle du « gros poster Centre Bell sold-out ».\nBorn in a storm on a wild Canadian lake\, Red Moon Road has come into its own on trails between coasts and journeys overseas. From living rooms to folk fest main-stages nationwide\, the trio has performed more than 1000 shows across 7 countries since 2012. SUMMARY:Shivering Songs 2025: Cut Cult + Nate & Busy Boys + Shriven at The Cap
DESCRIPTION:Cut Cult + Nate & The Busy Boys + Shriven\nDoors 8:30pm / Show 9pm\n19+\nWhy are Cut Cult?\nBecause lugging heavy gear around the world to produce music and play concerts is a cathartic and religious experience.\nWho are Cut Cult?\nBrian Borcherdt\, Loel Campbell\, and Matt McQuaid are three of the forming\, former\, and current members of Holy Fuck (XL Records\, Kobalt)\, who live in Nova Scotia and really enjoy\nmaking sounds together. Brian and Loel met while Brian was a record store employee and Loel was a fifteen year old aspiring drummer. Both were from ‘the sticks’ and both wanted to find\nsome kind of community. They made the first Holy Fuck records together and were later joined by Matt ‘punchy’ McQuaid on bass. Once scattered and no longer playing together professionally\, they convened as friends in Montreal to make late night noisy confessions. Now\, back in their home province\, they are Cut Cult.\nTheir resume includes: producing music for other artists\, like their own Dusted (Polyvinyl)\, and co-remixing Radiohead\, MIA\, etc\, warping records into the viral Chipmunks on 16 Speed\, playing drums in Wintersleep subbing in for Broken Social Scene and Billy Talent\, as well as co-founding (finding?) the Nowadays festival in Dartmouth.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1710548309874689/

SUMMARY:Les Hay Babies + Kaia Kater at Wilmot United Church
DESCRIPTION:Les Hay Babies + Kaia Kater at Wilmot United Church\nDoors 7pm / Show 8pm\nAll Ages\nTickets + Passes: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/shiveringsongs?\nPasses grant access to all events including The Fredericton Playhouse.\nLes Hay Babies\, one of Canada’s hottest francophone bands\, have been bringing forth their sparkling\, multifaceted folk-rock for over a decade. New Brunswick-born Acadians Julie Aubé\, Katrine Noël and Vivianne Roy were friends before joining their voices to a common project and thus strengthening the bonds that unite them through the music they create—as long as fun comes before work\, and work is done while having fun\nKaia Kater’s new album\, Strange Medicine (coming May 2024 on Free Dirt Records)\, opens with a haunting vision. Accompanied by Aoife O’Donovan\, Kater sings of the women burned at the stake as witches in 17th century Salem\, Massachusetts and their wish to strike back: “I dreamt I moved through you and / Burned my name into your chest”. It’s an opening salvo from an album that celebrates the power of women and oppressed people throughout history as they rise up and turn the poison of centuries of oppression into a strange kind of medicine. Kater’s songs are dialogues with these historical figures and meditations on her own modern life as well. In the years since her 2018 album\, Grenades\, on Smithsonian Folkways\, Kater has taken time to reinvent herself and hone her skills\, first attending film school to learn composition\, then diving deeper into her songwriting to come up with her most personal album yet. Feeling the pressure as a talented young songwriter\, banjo player\, and bandleader with three successful albums and an NPR Tiny Desk Concert under her belt\, Kater struggled initially with the expectations of her adopted genre\, Americana. “I was factoring everybody else’s perception into my songwriting\,” she says. “Would I write more honestly if I knew that no one would ever hear this?” With that in mind\, Kater retreated to her apartment in Montréal. Sitting at home with her banjo\, the songs unfolded in personal intimacy\, revealing windows into the perspective of women and revolutionaries through history. Co-producing with Joe Grass (Elisapie\, The Barr Brothers)\, Kater invited close friends and colleagues O’Donovan and Allison Russell to sing on the album\, along with longtime hero and American legend Taj Mahal. With lush arrangements and unexpected musical ideas drawn from genres as surprising as minimalist composition\, jazz drumming\, and film scores\, Strange Medicine is the bold next step in Kater’s career. It’s an album made beyond the white gaze of Americana\, unbeholden to a music industry that so often tokenizes and silences marginalized voices\, a Black Feminist perspective on a genre that refuses to cede power to Black women. But ultimately it’s a celebration of the self. The words of the poem “won’t you celebrate with me” by Lucille Clifton echoed in Kater’s ears throughout the process of making this album.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/598027199353784/

SUMMARY:Shivering Songs 2025: Motherhood 'Thunder Perfect Mind' Album Launch with Teke Teke + Good Dear Good
DESCRIPTION:Motherhood + Teke Teke + Good Dear Good at Fredericton Farmers’ Market\nDoors 8:30pm / Show 9pm\nWet / Dry\nFFO: Beach Boys\, Deerhoof\, Modest Mouse\, Osees\nPlayful as a puppy but smart as a whip\, New Brunswick\, Canada’s MOTHERHOOD has a knack for packing deeply conceptual art rock into a delightfully unpretentious package. Oft-described as “evil Beach Boys”\, the trio blends the ferocity of punk\, the finesse of surf\, and the raw energy of garage into something as complex as it is endearing.\nTheir forthcoming full-length\, Thunder Perfect Mind\, narrates the sudden abduction of an unsuspecting pedestrian by a “dark\, expanding Cloud”. To eclipse what controls\, the only way out is through. But what lies beyond the Cloud?\nInfluenced as much by Bad Brains as Ennio Morricone\, Motherhood happily march to the beat of their own maniacal drum. Motherhood’s genius lies in their ability to set deep thoughts to rippin’ riffs\, Trojan horsing their serpentine songwriting under the guise of rock n’ roll.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/4058435241052610/
