SUMMARY:St. Andrews Comedy Festival featuring Ron James & James Mullinger
DESCRIPTION:The hilarious Saint Andrews Comedy Festival is back by popular demand\nDuration\nFriday\, September 13th at 6:00pm\nRain Date will be Saturday\, September 14th\nSaturday\, September 14th at 5:30pm\nRain Date will be Sunday\, September 15th\nDoors open 60 minutes before showtime\nRates\nWeekend Pass: $80.00\nFriday only: $25.00\nSaturday only: $70.00\nAbout\nThe 2nd Annual Saint Andrews Comedy Festival is returning to the KIRA Amphitheatre by popular demand.\nJoin us and some of Atlantic Canada’s most iconic comedians as we fill the award-winning Kingsbrae Garden full of laughter.\nAges 14+. Due to the live nature of comedy\, we cannot guarantee that all language will be suitable for all audiences.\nLine up\nFriday\, September 13\, 2024\nJimmy Flynn\nJeff Irwin\nSaturday\, September 14\, 2024\nRon James\nJames Mullinger\nMeet the Performers\n🌟Ron James\nConsistently hailed by audiences and critics from coast to coast\, RON JAMES has been selling out theatres in Canada for more than 20 years.\n‘…a master comedian with a distinctly Canadian viewpoint’ – St. John’s Telegram\n‘…scarcely time to breath between fits of helpless laughter’ – Halifax Herald\nThis verbal gymnast marries a comedian’s eye for satire with a writer’s ear for language\, taking fans on a two-hour roller coaster ride\, that cuts a wide swath through contemporary culture with razor-sharp wit and poetically charged delivery.\nAfter graduating with a BA degree in History from Acadia University\, (from whom he was bestowed an Honourary Doctorate in the Humanities in 2014)\, Ron moved from Halifax to Toronto. From there he kicked into gear\, what has been a forty-one-year career\, when he was hired by North America’s premier breeding ground of comedy\, The Second City. Throughout the 1980’s Ron appeared in dozens of commercials\, television roles and films.\nIn 1990\, he and his young family moved to Los Angeles\, where he joined the cast of ‘My Talk Show\,’ a television series for Ron Howard’s Imagine TV\, that was syndicated across America. Although lauded by Newsweek as the ‘cult hit to watch for the Fall 1990 television season’\, it was cancelled in less than a year.\nFinding himself just another actor in a town stinky with them\, he managed to land a few guest-starring roles and became the pitchman for Texas Tourism in a series of award-winning commercials. Mostly though\, he was unemployed and going broke.\nThat’s when he started to write the show that\, upon his return to Canada in ’93\, would become his critically acclaimed solo turn that led him to stand-up comedy\, ‘Up and Down in Shaky Town’: One Man’s Journey Through the California Dream’.\nAfter five years spent honing his craft onstage\, eking out a living from Canada’s laughably lean club circuit\, Ron was invited to launch the premiere season of CTV’s Comedy Network when ‘Shaky Town’ was given its own ninety-minute special.\n‘…fast\, funny and smart’ – Montreal Gazette\n‘…simply the best’ – Toronto Sun\nThe next several years saw him voted Comedian of the Year at the CCA’s\, appear half a dozen times at Just for Laughs\, Halifax and Winnipeg Comedy Festivals\, write for 22 Minutes\, join the cast of award-winning satire ‘Made in Canada’ and star in the first television series of his own creation\, ‘Blackfly’\, which ran for two seasons on Global Television. (Unfortunately\, Global wasn’t aware of that).\nAfter Blackfly’s cancellation\, Ron hit the road…hard… playing every theatre from Corner Brook to Courtney-Comox for nine years.\n‘…cleverly\, hysterically funny’ – Toronto Star\n‘…a virtuoso comedic performance’ – Globe and Mail\nThese cross-Canada journeys\, spent battling blizzards a Yeti wouldn’t wander\, resulted in the first of what would eventually be a record-breaking nine one-hour comedy specials for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation\, which fast became a New Year’s Eve viewing tradition. In the middle of all that he also starred in a television series\, ‘The Ron James Show’\, which ran for five years.\nWhen globalism’s first pandemic struck a torpedo to the bow of live performance in March 2020\, scuttling careers the worldwide over\, the only option for survival was to work from home. That’s when Ron began streaming another round of original one-hour comedy specials called ‘Live from My Living Room’ on ZOOM\, which drew audiences worldwide.\nOh\, and during the year of the plague he also took the time to write a book. ‘All Over the Map’: Rambles and Ruminations from the Canadian Road’\, to be released by publishing giant\, Penguin-Random House September 28\, 2021.\n🌟Jimmy Flynn\nOver the past 40 years\, Jimmy Flynn has become a musical comedy powerhouse. His list of credits is astounding. He has performed with The Dixie Chicks at Massey Hall in Toronto\, he has also performed with “The Man in Black”\, Johnny Cash; Tommy James and the Shondells; Charlie Pride; The Everley Brothers\, and with Cheech and Chong‘s Last Tour. Jimmy Flynn became a popular radio and television personality during the early 1990s. To date\, he has produced and broadcast over 400 radio shows\, a 13-week television series\, four feature length comedy videos that have gone double and triple platinum\, seven gold CDs\, a Christmas recording for children and a four-time bestselling joke book. He also owns his own travel and entertainment tour company\, The Great Canadian Comedy Tour Company. Jimmy has raised millions of dollars for Canadian charities and community groups. He is Canada’s foremost musical comedy act!\n🌟James Mullinger\nBritish and Canadian comedian James Mullinger is celebrating 20 years working as a stand up!\nHe has had a busy year – publishing a bestselling memoir\, releasing a sitcom\, launching a new stand up special as well as editing Atlantic Canada’s only international magazine The Maritime Edit\, but now he is back on the road doing what he does best… entertaining live audiences from coast to coast.\n2024 is his 20th year in comedy and to celebrate he is touring North America with his best jokes and routines from two decades on stages around the world. Also featuring brand new material exclusively for 2024\, the show will feature his “greatest hits” including routines from his decade touring the UK that have never been performed in Canada before.\nAlso featuring brand new material exclusive to this tour\, James Mullinger Greatest Hits Live is the perfect show for long term fans and newcomers alike. Enjoy James’ best jokes from his 20 years touring the world as a stand up comedian. Non-stop laughter guaranteed!\nThis is James’ only full length public performance in Saint Andrews in 2024!\n🌟Jeff Irwin\nMaritime comedian Jeff Irwin has toured across Canada and the Eastern United States performing for conventions and private events. He has done motivational speaking\, fundraising\, keynotes for government and volunteer groups\, along with award banquets for both lawyers and prisoners.\nJeff was born and raised in St. Andrews\, By-the-Sea\, New Brunswick. He’s appeared on CBC TV\, the Comedy Network and on CBC Radio One. He’s performed at many national conferences in the Maritimes as well as North America.\nHe’s opened shows for other Canadian comics like Steve Smith\, Marshall Button\, Jimmy Flynn Cathy Jones\, Bette MacDonald\, Maynard Morrison and Sandy Gillis\, among many others.\nThe KIRA Amphitheatre can be accessed via Kingsbrae Garden located at 220 King\, St. Andrews\, New Brunswick.\nTickets can be purchased by visiting www.kingsbraeartscentre.com/events\nTickets are non refundable.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/496721649679425/

SUMMARY:Fog Lit Festival: Poetry Event with Triny Finlay
DESCRIPTION:Presented in partnership with The Lorenzo Society\, join poet Douglas Walbourne-Gough at the Saint John Arts Centre on Friday\, September 27 at 7pm for a reading featuring work from his books “Crow Gulch” (Goose Lane\, 2019) and the upcoming “Island” (Goose Lane\, 2024).\nDouglas will be in-conversation with Rachel Bryant.\n—\nBOOK DESCRIPTION: “Canada rejected our applications for enrolment in the Qalipu First Nation. Initially\, I was relieved by the rejection. I’d watched my hometown divide itself — are you Mi′kmaq or settler? Mi′kmaq or not Mi′kmaq enough?”\nCentred around the Newfoundland Mi’kmaq experience in the wake of the controversial Qalipu First Nation enrolment process\, Island wades through the fracture and mistrust that continues to linger in many communities. In this new collection\, Douglas\nWalbourne-Gough expands upon issues of identity and history that he introduced in Crow Gulch\, offering a deeply personal and equally beautiful exploration of Mi’kmaw and Newfoundland identity.\nWalbourne-Gough’s narrative poems trace the formation of identity\, not through status documentation\, but through its deeper roots in childhood memories\, family\, spirituality\, and dreams. Throughout this collection\, he approaches life in fragments — snuggling into his nan’s sealskin snowsuit\, learning Mi’kmaq from an app\, or the myriad of complex emotions that come with receiving a status card — and watches them transform into pieces of an everlasting puzzle. Island reckons with an often-ignored\, yet persistent\, effect of colonialism — fractured identities.\n—\nDouglas Walbourne-Gough is a poet and mixed/adopted status member of the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation from Elmastukwek (the Bay of Islands)\, Ktaqmkuk (Newfoundland). His poetry has appeared in numerous publications\, including Best Canadian Poetry in English\, Grain\, and the Fiddlehead\, and has won the Riddle Fence Poetry Prize.\nWalbourne-Gough’s debut collection\, Crow Gulch\, won the E.J. Pratt Poetry Award. It was also a finalist for NL Reads\, the Derek Walcott Prize for Poetry\, and the Raymond Souster Award\, and was longlisted for the First Nations Community READS Award. Island is his second book of poetry.\n\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/436928156061490

SUMMARY:Fog Lit Festival: Kids' Craft Workshop with Riel Nason
DESCRIPTION:Calling all young Fog Lit fans! Local author Riel Nason will be at the Main Branch of the Saint John Free Public Library on Saturday\, September 28 at 11am for a Kids’ Craft Workshop and reading from her book The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt.\n—\nBOOK DESCRIPTION: When you’re a quilt instead of a sheet\, being a ghost is hard! An adorable picture book for fans of Stumpkin and How to Make Friends with a Ghost.\nGhosts are supposed to be sheets\, light as air and able to whirl and twirl and float and soar. But the little ghost who is a quilt can’t whirl or twirl at all\, and when he flies\, he gets very hot.\nHe doesn’t know why he’s a quilt. His parents are both sheets\, and so are all of his friends. (His great-grandmother was a lace curtain\, but that doesn’t really help cheer him up.) He feels sad and left out when his friends are zooming around and he can’t keep up.\nBut one Halloween\, everything changes. The little ghost who was a quilt has an experience that no other ghost could have\, an experience that only happens because he’s a quilt . . . and he realizes that it’s OK to be different.\n—\nRiel Nason is a Canadian novelist and textile artist. Her acclaimed debut novel The Town That Drowned won the Commonwealth Book Prize for Canada and Europe\, and the Margaret and John Savage First Book Award. Riel’s original quilts have been exhibited across Canada; she is best known for her whimsical selvage quilts and bold use of color\, and she has published two books on the subject: Modern Selvage Quilting and Sew a Modern Halloween. Riel grew up in Hawkshaw\, New Brunswick\, and now lives in Quispamsis\, NB\, with her husband\, son\, daughter and cats.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/793130176230084/

SUMMARY:Fog Lit Festival: Fiction Launch with Michelle Winters
DESCRIPTION:Join author Michelle Winters at Imperial Theatre on Saturday\, September 28 at 7pm for our Fiction Launch. Author of the acclaimed debut novel I Am a Truck (Invisible Publishing\, 2016)\, Michelle will bring her funny and furious new novel Hair for Men (House of Anansi\, 2024) to Fog Lit Festival.\nMichelle will be in-conversation with Julia Wright.\n—\nBOOK DESCRIPTION: The second novel by Scotiabank Giller Prize finalist Michelle Winters teems with hot towel shaves and the steady thrum of female rage.\nSpurred by adolescent trauma\, Louise adopts a life of hardcore punk violence until she stumbles into a job at a mysterious men’s hair salon\, where her unique relationship with her clientele shows her a more perfect world—or so it seems. When that world is overturned\, she flees to a marina on the East Coast\, where she lives free from reminders of her past—except the duffle-bagged ones she jettisons nightly in a forsaken cove. But on the day of the Tragically Hip’s 2016 farewell performance in Kingston\, a man surfaces from the Bay of Fundy\, rousing long-dormant urges and giving Louise an unexpected gift: the chance to make things right.\nFunny\, warm\, and furious\, Hair for Men is a subversive exploration of gender\, forgiveness\, and chucking convention.\n—\nMichelle Winters is a writer\, painter\, and translator born and raised in Saint John\, NB. Her debut novel\, I Am a Truck\, was shortlisted for the 2017 Scotiabank Giller Prize. She is the translator of Kiss the Undertow and Daniil and Vanya by Marie-Hélène Larochelle. She lives in Toronto.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1045789873919708/
