SUMMARY:Le Vent du Nord | Fredericton Playhouse
DESCRIPTION:The award winning and highly acclaimed band Le Vent du Nord is a leading force in Quebec’s progressive francophone folk movement. The group’s vast repertoire draws from both traditional sources and original compositions\, while enhancing its hard-driving soulful music (rooted in the Celtic diaspora) with a broad range of global influences. “Featuring button accordion\, guitar and fiddle\, the band’s sound is defined by the hurdy-gurdy\, which adds an earthy\, rough-hewn flavor to even the most buoyant dance tunes.” — Boston Herald\nSince its inception in August 2002\, Le Vent du Nord has enjoyed meteoric success\, performing on over 4 continents\, and racking up several prestigious awards\, including a Grand Prix du Disque Charles Cros\, two JUNOs\, a Canadian Folk Music Award\, and “Artist of the Year” at the North American Folk Alliance Annual Gala.\n.\nThanks to our Performance Partners\, Parkland Retirement Living and le Centre Communautaire Sainte-Anne!\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/820734116345349/

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT Late night blues - Swinging to spring after party
DESCRIPTION:Still looking to dance after Swinging to spring? Come unwind and slow it down with some blues dancing at the Speakeasy (located inside the Royal Barbershop\, 530 Queen St.)! There will be a great curated playlist and the bar will be open (last call at 1:30 am).\n10 $ cover for this special after hours event\, paid at the door (cash or card)\nBecause of bar capacity\, please email frederictonswing@gmail.com to reserve your spot.\nNo lesson will be provided\, no partner or experience required\, this is just for fun! 😊\nWhat is blues dancing?\nBlues dancing is a collection of dances (such as Ballroomin’\, Jukin’\, and Drag Blues) that are done to a variety of music – sometimes slow and sensual\, sometimes fast and funky\, and everything in between. Blues shares a lot of similarities with swing dancing. Both dances value grounded body posture and improvisation between the dancers and the music. The history of the two dances is also intertwined; both dances originated and evolved from vernacular African dances\, rhythms\, and movements. SUMMARY:ROSS NEILSEN COMES HOME!! LIVE @ Dolans Pub
DESCRIPTION:Ross Neilsen makes his return to Fredericton for a live show at Dolan’s Pub\, his first in the city since 2022. The evening will take on an extra celebratory feel\, considering the friends\, fans and memories attached to Fredericton for Neilsen\, who is now based in Saskatoon (SK).\nNeilsen is a proven road warrior\, who crossed the country and back many times\, both as a solo artist\, and with his backing band The Sufferin’ Bastards dating back to 2010. Neilsen’s music has not only traveled him all over Canada\, but he’s also taken his distinct ‘finger-style’ of playing to Mexico\, to the fabled blues grounds of the Hill Country region of Mississippi\, the bayous of Louisiana and even to Macon\, Georgia where he was awarded the privilege of playing the holy grail of blues\, rock and soul: Duane Allman’s 1957 Les Paul Gold Top.\nIn 2012 Ross was chosen as a semi-finalist in the solo/duo category at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis\, TN and in 2014\, he studied at Camp Copperhead under the tutelage of Steve Earle.\nIn early 2016\, Neilsen returned to the studio to cut his sixth studio album with Juno winning team\, producer Steve Marriner (MonkeyJunk) and ace engineer\, Ken Friesen (Tragically Hip\, Blue Rodeo). Elemental was released in September of 2016 and received much critical appraise and airplay support from all over the world.\nIn more recent years\, Neilsen had paused his career to start a family\, and of course the pandemic played its part too\, but now he is set to rekindle his career\, and a trip home to ‘Freddy Beach’ as the weather starts to warm sounds like a great night out.\nTickets are $20 advance or $25 at the door. Show at 7:30PM.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/6702172696553710/

SUMMARY:Len O'Neill/Tom Lutz/Marc McLaughlin At Broken Record
DESCRIPTION:A trio of roots/Americana singer songwriters will take the stage at Broken Record for an evening of song and story\nDoors at 8 PM\nShow at 9 PM\n$10 at the door\nLen O’Neill is a songwriter from St. John’s\, Newfoundland. His songs are poetic in style and personal in scope. Here’s what songwriter John Moran has to say about Len’s work:\n“He’s got songs that are meaningful in a way that most songwriters struggle to achieve\, he’s not just stringing together a bunch of lyrics and chords that sound cool – he’s speaking from the heart and giving you something you might need. He writes in the way that you’d hope to be spoken to by a good friend during a challenging time.”\nHis debut solo album Out Of View comes out in April 2024\nTommy Lutz is a singer-songwriter who hails from Nova Scotia but lives in rural New Brunswick. He specializes in original stories and songs in the folk and traditional realm\, but likes to mix in a good rock and roll song to keep things fresh!\nMarc McLaughlin\, a versatile singer-songwriter from Newfoundland & Labrador now in New Brunswick\, gained acclaim with his 2023 EP\, ‘I Don’t Want to Be Blue Anymore\,’ featuring emotive guitar-driven rock. His upcoming fall 2024 EP expands his range with piano melodies and drum machines\, while live shows highlight his intimate solo performances on piano and guitar. He’s also contributed to notable East Coast acts like Weary\, Strongboy\, and Bleu.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1211196513096870/

SUMMARY:Community Conversation - Heteronormative Media Bias in the Changes to Policy 713
DESCRIPTION:**Virtual participation will be available – we will share the Team’s Meeting invite link to this event page on the day of the event.**\n—\nJoin us on Sunday\, May 19th\, 2024 from 11AM to 12PM at Imprint Youth Association (224 York St.\, Fredericton\, NB) for a guided community conversation on the heteronormative media bias in the coverage of Policy 713 changes.\nWhat is heteronormativity? Heteronormativity is of or relating to\, or based on the attitude that heterosexuality is the only normal and natural expression of sexuality. It assumes that identities and experiences – specifically cisgender and heterosexual ones — are presumed to be the “default” in our society.\nMedia plays a vital role in informing communities on nuanced topics such as Policy 713; however\, Western Media coverage of S2LGBTQIA+ topics has historically reinforced white\, cis\, straight\, and heterosexual norms in communities. With the help of queer graduate students and Imprint Youth Association\, we will sit down and talk about the ways New Brunswick media outlets covered Policy 713 changes.\n—-\nWe are requesting that in-person guests please wear a mask to keep everyone safe.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/479114047875987/

SUMMARY:Acoustic Punk- Jon Creeden/Squaredance Kid/Nick Shrubsole
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of acoustic punk from 3 acts that have been touring north America for 20 + years\nDoors at 8 PM\nShow at 9 PM\n$10 at the door\nJon Creeden has been touring around with an acoustic guitar\, sweating\, eating burritos and making friends all over Canada\, the USA and Europe for the last decade. Now with the help of some of those friends Jon Creeden & The Flying Hellfish are kicking it up a notch with their spice weasels\, to bring an even louder and sweatier show to a town near you.\nNick Shrubsole\nStill refusing to let go of his punk rock youth\, this former lead singer of Canadian punk band Broadcast Zero (Rebel Time Records/Stumble Records) offers up some raspy\, hard-hitting acoustic punk folk stories to which you can sing along.\nJon Bowie grew up in a family surrounded by music where kids and adults alike were often called upon to perform at any given moment. After spending spending almost 20 years in Fredericton’s progressive all ages scene playing in bands room 101 and the Missing\, he’s spent the past several years honing in songwriting as folk-noir act The Squaredance Kid\, and with his electric outfit\, the Westerberg Suicides.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/366825045710295/

SUMMARY:Rick & Sean Hutchins and Friends
DESCRIPTION:Help us honour Phyllis Prendergast and make a difference in the city! Join us at Dolan’s Pub on Wednesday\, May 22nd at 7PM to enjoy sounds of Rick & Sean Hutchins and Friends in support of a cause near and dear to our hearts. Cash donations will be collected at the door.\nPhyllis Prendergast left a real impression on our community and we’d like to honour her in a special way. She was a generous\, caring woman and loved Fredericton and worked tirelessly to support the causes close to her heart: Meals on Wheels\, River Jam Fredericton\, Dooryard Arts Festival\, Shivering Songs\, Larlee Creek Hullabaloo\, Medicare Alumni\, but her main love was the Harvest Music Festival for which she was a driving force for 27 years.\n‘Name a Seat’ is the fundraising drive happening now in support of the new Performing Arts Center (Playhouse) which allows for a loved one’s name to be engraved on a seat in the new venue to honour their legacy of helping build a vibrant community. And Phyllis definitely built a loving\, vibrant community! Nothing would make her more proud\, or be more fitting than an engraved seat for herself and a second for her guest since we know she always take a friend along to spread the joy!\nTo keep Phyllis’s memory alive for years & years to come\, we invite you to help us raise the required funds to make this possible!\nTotal required is $2\,000 for the two seats. We’ve currently been able to raise $635 through the GO FUND ME campaign. Any money collected over the required $2\,000 will be donated to the Fredericton Food Bank.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1396355967735391/

SUMMARY:Benched: Uppercut Dance Theatre | Fredericton Playhouse
DESCRIPTION:In this contemporary Danish dance work\, five male dancers perform in Johan Kølkjær’s set design of oversized and mobile benches that are constantly being transformed. Award-winning choreographer Stephanie Thomasen has created the concept and choreography for the performance\, where the dancers with great musicality\, physicality and interaction examine human relationships. “The five dancers toss themselves around a long black bench\, in a fusion of street and modern dance\, as if it were a bouncy launch pad. A playful and cool symbiosis between men and bench\,” writes Politiken. It is a piece about finding one’s place and settling down on the bench of life.\n.\n“Pay What You Will” is offered on select performances. Here’s how it works:\n– You still need a ticket. Book your seats in advance at tickets.theplayhouse.ca\, by calling our box office at 458-8344\, or visiting us at 686 Queen Street.\n– At the performance\, we will provide an envelope and ask audience members to pay whatever amount they wish (based on their own individual experience) following the performance.\nYou decide the price of your tickets!\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/958256371895901/
