Join us on Sunday, May 19th, 2024 from 11AM to 12PM at Imprint Youth Association (224 York St., Fredericton, NB) for a guided community conversation on the heteronormative media bias in the coverage of Policy 713 changes.
What is heteronormativity? Heteronormativity is of or relating to, or based on the attitude that heterosexuality is the only normal and natural expression of sexuality. It assumes that identities and experiences – specifically cisgender and heterosexual ones — are presumed to be the “default” in our society.
Media plays a vital role in informing communities on nuanced topics such as Policy 713; however, Western Media coverage of S2LGBTQIA+ topics has historically reinforced white, cis, straight, and heterosexual norms in communities. With the help of queer graduate students and Imprint Youth Association, we will sit down and talk about the ways New Brunswick media outlets covered Policy 713 changes.
