ECSQ Play Smith, Schubert & Wijeratne (Saint John)
Concert 3: ECSQ Play Smith, Schubert & Wijeratne
The ECSQ starts off the new year with some fresh and rocking string quartets. “2 Pop Songs on Antique Poems” by Dinuk Wijerante, winner of the 2016 JUNO for classical composition of the year, is a collision of old and new. The beauty and meaning of vintage poems inspire loops, grooves, and catchy tunes, with some recognizable quotes to our concert’s final piece.
“The day will come when a single, freshly observed carrot will start a revolution,” is the inspiration for Gabriella Smith’s captivating work, Carrot Revolution. The piece travels between flowing fiddle-inspired melodies and crunchy (perhaps like a carrot?) rhythms and percussion. The final piece of the concert, Schubert’s Death and the Maiden, is an absolute favourite in the repertoire. Power, beauty and storytelling are woven with beautifully seamless structure.
